RUSSIAN ANARCHIST MOBS ATTACK U. S. EMBASSY
y - ii ii i iMiiiiiiii.iL.jii.ja.-..imij.iK-'jjM..-'.. nmmmmmmmmmmmmm'tmmmmmmHmmBiKFn...t ft ji
Incited by Nikolai Lenine, the Socialist radical, who had just returned from Switzerland, a Russian anarchist mob marched on the American Embassy in Petrograd with the purpose of assassinating Ambassador Francis. Lenine had told the crowd that America -was the enemy of Socialism. He gave at a reason the fact that Mooney had been hanged. It la presumed that he meant Thomas J. Mooney, the San Francisco labor leader, who Is under sentence of death in connection with the bomb explosion at the San Francisco Preparedness parade last July, but who has been granted a new trial. Ambassador Francis was at dinner with some English guests and did not understand what danger he was in until a battalion of Russian soldiers, rushed to anticipate the mob, arrived to guard the premises. The plotters scattered when it was learned that the troops had arrived ahead of them. ' '

CHICAGO. May 1. Acting upon Instructions fiora the department of Justice at Washington, United States district attorney C. F. Clyne today started an investigation of reports that the strike of bakers which has cut off nearly eighty per cent, of the city's bread supply, was precipitated by German aliens for the purpose of upbraiding the government. Charges that the rank and file of the bakers In the United States did not sanction the action of the president of the bakers' international union signing the statement issu?d at Washington by conference of labor leaders headed by Samuel Gompers to the effect that no strikes would be called, except under stress of vital issues were made by Tony Weth, business Cgent of the striking bakers' onion. Shipments of bakery psodncts were received In Chicago today from several nearby Illinois and Wisconsin cities, but the responses from concerns in Milwaukee, St. LoeK Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Cleveland was limited, most of them asserting that they were unable to provide the supplies required. .

Page Gen. Sherman; He Described War
April showers do not always bring May flowers; do they? Yesterday, and in fact, for several days, there has been a bountiful supply of April rains, but this morning few evidences of May flowers are seen. It seems that no rule holds true this year. The exception .is the rule now. Perhaps the scarcity of sunshine this May day is due to the war. Why not? Everything else is blamed on the war. You know the hens do not lay as many eggs now as they did before the war, neither do the cows give as much milk. And it is reported that the maple trees did not give as much sap -as before. It is quite logical, then, to reason that sunshine will be scarce this year.

High cost of coal and the Prohibition bill are worrying the school board. At Its meeting last night, the school board awarded the contract for coal for the schools to Mather Brothers company. The price of the coal is $7 per ton, which is twice as much as paid this year. This will mean an added expense of about $6,000 more than last year. Due to the prohibition bill there will be a loss of $6,000 liquor license next year. As the situation now stands it is quite probable that taxes will be raised this year. - The employment bureau, which, the high school has Instituted, was endorsed.
