By E. F. MURPHY I Civic Gardener for Richmond. Timeliness is one of the most Important items in successful gardening. Just as soon as the ground has become dry enough to work, it should be plowed. The optimum time for plowing is a comparatively short one; so if you" have not already secured your vacant lot, make arrangements for one
now so that when the right time comes to have it plowed you will be ready,' " It is decidedly advantageous to have the ground plowed in the fall, especially a sodded soil. If plowed in the fall, it gives the scd a chance to rot; besides, ground which has been plowed in the fall dries out much quicker the following spring and enables one to put out an earlier garden. It often happens that early in the spring when the cool season crops, such as radishes, lettuce, onions, . etc., should be planted, the soil remains in ideal working condition only a short time, and
then becomes so thoroughly wet by such rains as we are experiencing that further work in the garden is precluded for several days. , The best time for plowing is when the soil Is betwixt wet and dry, when it breaks from the plow. The plowing should be about six inches deep and the plow should not be allowed to take more land than it can turn to the best advantage. A sodded soil must be turned completely or trouble will be experienced in working the garden. -Your plowmanwlll understand Just how a good job of plowing can be done. If your ground has been plowed before the rains, don't try to work it before it is dry enough, nor should you Trait too lone. Timeliness is import-
! ant for the best results.
To determine when the soil has reached the proper condition for working press a small portion of soil lightly into a balL When the fingers are
relaxed, the moss of soil should retain its shape and show the marks of tb fingers. Then rub the mass of soil lightly between the thumb and finger. If it crumbles readily and does not stick to the hand, it is in the optimum condition for working. One may experience a little difficulty, in being able to tell exactlr when soil should be worked, but If be endeavors to approach the optimum time and is a careful observer, experience will teach him Just when the best time has come. fContinued From Page One. prehension as to what the morrow will bring forward. The majority socialists are energetically supporting the government in its efforts to cajole or threaten the workers into refraining from striking. Even the radical minority seems to be frightened at the possible results of the agitation it has fostered. Some of the radical newspapers are reported to have launched an eleventh hour appear in an effort to avert the strike, fearing that in sowing the wind they, will reap a whirlwind that will shake the foundations of the country. . Other Storm Centers Restless. Austria and Sweden are two other storm centers where May Day may evoke popular uprisings of far reaching effect In the face of the brewing storm word comes that the Hungarian government . has declared itself in favcr of important democratic reforms. On the other hand the Austrian emperor is reported to have refused the rpslgnatlon of Premier Tisza, "Iron man" of the dual monarchy and bulwark of ' Pan-Germanism. Another curloils and unexplained item from Austria-Hungary says that in Bohemia, long a hot bed of disaffection all German papers have been suppressed. Reaches Confused Period. The entire situation in Europe appears to have reached one of those confused stages where conflicting news makes - the relative importance of r-vents uncertain and obscure, a situation Intensified by the increasing rigors of the censorship in all countries. The military command in France is under fire and there are reports In the Paris press that the appointment of General Pctaln as chief of staff heralds many other changes among high officers.

THREE ways of making love ! Here you have them, for Triangle stars are nothing if not . versatile ! What would the world be without men, maids and "love 6tuff"? And what would the screen be without exponents of "love that makes the world go round"? Villains, vampires, gun play and hairbreadth escapes are doubtless essentials of the silent drama, but it is the good old fashioned bit of love making that sends -us home foelinp: that a sentimental leaf out of our own lives has been caught by the camera. And there lives no man or woman who docs not like to Imagine that he or she has at some time been hero or heroine to some one. It's a mighty cheer- up idea to carry along at all times, especially if luck goes apainst you. What woman wouldn't be thrilled by William Desmond's
love making? "Billy" of the Triangle-Kay-Bee, handsome Irishman that he Is, kissed the Blarney stone before he came to America, thereby laying up a solid foundation to win out In love. In the above picture he is giving an imitation of a modern cave man boldly kissing a pretty girl without first asking permission. She is frowning, but evidently that means nothing, as she has carefully grabbed Billy by the wrist bo that he cannot get away. - f Bessie Love is young and shy, but. she is demonstrating that a sweetheart should be helped over the rough places when he is traveling the love route. You can see that by the strangle hold she has on smiling Elmer Clifton, who is looking down at her. One doesn't need to be told that Charles Ray has won out in the game of hearts despite the fact that in his great baseball play, "The Pinch Hitter," he is a bashful country bumpkin Charlie has a way of his own, and the prldeful glow on his face tells that he is lucky in love. Sylvia Bremer also looks as if there was nothing else in the world to be desired 1 Youth, love "and they lived happy ever afterward" will always make the best fade out!
