GEORGE MILLER TOPS LOCAL HOG MARKET WITH 250 FINE HEAD

Receipts at the Glen Miller stock yards last week were as follows: Hogs, 319; cattle, 37; calves, 70. George Miller on the market with ZoO head of fine hogs topped the market with a price of $15.25. ; William Williamson received $2,156.25 for fifteen head of steers. This consignment was one of the best ever handled by the yards, according to Jerome Ehurlay !n his weekly statement of local market conditions. The optimum time for plowing is a comparatively short one; so if you" have not already secured your vacant lot, make arrangements for one

now so that when the right time comes to have it plowed you will be ready,' " It is decidedly advantageous to have the ground plowed in the fall, especially a sodded soil. If plowed in the fall, it gives the scd a chance to rot; besides, ground which has been plowed in the fall dries out much quicker the following spring and enables one to put out an earlier garden. then becomes so thoroughly wet by such rains as we are experiencing that further work in the garden is precluded for several days. , The best time for plowing is when the soil Is betwixt wet and dry, when it breaks from the plow. The plowing should be about six inches deep and the plow should not be allowed to take more land than it can turn to the best advantage. To determine when the soil has reached the proper condition for working press a small portion of soil lightly into a balL When the fingers are

relaxed, the moss of soil should retain its shape and show the marks of tb fingers. Then rub the mass of soil lightly between the thumb and finger. If it crumbles readily and does not stick to the hand, it is in the optimum condition for working. One may experience a little difficulty, in being able to tell exactlr when soil should be worked, but If be endeavors to approach the optimum time and is a careful observer, experience will teach him Just when the best time has come. '

LONDON, April SO. The capture of some prisoners and a machine gun in minor operations is reported in the official statement issued by the war office this morning. The statement says: "In a small local operation between Monchy-Le-Preux and the Scarpe river we captured a few prisoners and improved our position during the night. Our troops also made a successful raid north of Ypres, capturing 18 prisoners and a machine gun."
