. CHAPTER XXII , Home Again Lady Torrens did not lnd Lord WUlan at borne. To ber deep annoyance abe learned that he had, gone to Hurllngham and was not to be back until late In the evening. "I cannot and will not leave Robert In a police station or the night' she determined. While the chauffeur waited respectfully for her orders she thought furiously. Suddenly her face cleared. "Drive to Sir George Fowns's," she ordered. "Temple Court and be quick.". As the car drove up she saw the great K. C. just preparing to step into a cab. "George George Fowns!" she cried excitedly.

He turned amusedly in her direction. "Ah, it is you, Lady Torrens! What is it? Can I help iou?"' ,..-' u Breathlessly sh told him the story. His thin-lipped, humorous mouth twitched as he heard her 'account. ' "I think." perhaps1 that I'd better drive back with you," he said genially. "Oh, would you?" she.; exclaimed thankfully. As they drove along she told him about Fane's illness and operation. "Gorde the man - who was . found hanged was the surgeon, was he?" he asked curiously. "Pity he's not alive to make good the harm he's done." . "George, you have given me an idea for which I shall thank you always. I'd forgotten Stelnius forgotten him, and in him is our only hope now." Sir George was interested. "You will ask Steinius to operate again?" he asked keenly. "That Is exactly what I shall do." , "Supposing he fails?" "Robert will still be no worse; and even if he were, wouldn't any rlsk.be worth while under the circumstances? "It is the most remarkable case I over heard of," the lawyer said, "and yet when you come to dissect the case like all very clever things, it's diabolically simple. One certain touch of the knife, and pressure's brought to bear on the brain, and a man's memory is gone completely. . Good Lord! it Is genius, that sort of thing." "It's deviltry," Lady Torrens said. "The two are often coincident," Fowns added dryly. When the police station, was reach
ed the great K. C. drew Hink and the inspector to one side. After a moment the' men'retlred into a room by themselves." ' Fowns laid the case before them. ."It's an absurd charge," he said, "on the face of it. No court would hear it, I tell you." 9 The inspector rubbed his ear. "To the best of my understanding the gentleman's gone through the marriage ceremony twice, and that's bigamy," he said gruffly. Patiently Fowns retold his explanation. "I'm with you, sir," Hink said. The suburban inspector was puzzled. His superior officer was content; this
lawyer was content. "I suppose it's no good my . holding out." he said at length." "Jkly dear sir," Fowns said pleasantly, "these marriages are both empty forms simply; they are not valid. It is extremely doubtful if, in view of Captain Fane's derangement of mind, Mrs. Fane will not decide to annul the marriage at once. You must sec that you can't charge a man who has not voluntarily contracted a second marriage with bigamy?" The inspector rose. "You know all about it, sir," he said respectfully. "So far as I'm concerned the gentleman can go free.f Fowns told his triumph to Lady Torrens, waiting with Cecil in Robert's room. Rachel had gone home, and Dosser had gone, too. Wide-eyed, Cecil watched Robert. What was he going to do?
Sir George went up to him. "Well, Captain Fane, you are free to go where you like," be said cheerfully. ; "I suppose you will return with Lady Torrens?" I can tell, you, you have been a nine days' mystery in town, i You have sent up the, circulation of the newspapers. ; Robert' took the, outstretched 'hand. The misery in his face touched the older man. "Poor, devil," be thought as he went to his car "poor devil, with a life he can't remember and a future be can't live as he likes." Lady Torrens took Cecil aside. "My dear," she . said, "for L tonight I'm afraid we must be alone. ' ! can't
very well under existing circumstances take .you back with Robert and ' me. " Say goodby to Robert now and ' try" her voice quavered " try for all our sakes to explain things a little to him. I'll come back to you in a little while." When she had gone and they -were alone Cecil moved unconsciously further away from Robert. ' He made as though to follow, her; then, hesitating, drew back.
