On The Screen

WASHINGTON Patrons of the silent drama are fast becoming as critical for good acting by those playing upon the screen as they are demanding of those of the legitimate drama. The fact that there is a general demand throughout the

country for higher art in photoplays has brought forth new efforts on the part of producers to give to patrons what they want, and that is one of the reasons why the higher class of artists are becoming Identified with the

drama of the screen. It is believed that public opinion will accord to her a proper credit for having done much to advance the quality of dramatic art as set forth on the ecreen,' especially as shown-in her latest play, "The Tiger Woman." Miss Bara is ambitious to become far more than a mere person 'Whose pictures may be admired or disliked, but to be recognized as an artiste of genuine accomplishments, and from the record she has made in the past there is not the least doubt but that patrons of moving pictures will extend to her deserved recognition for her splendid efforts in the sphere of high ideals. Today and Thursday, WASHINGTON The arrival of "Hell Morgan's Girl" at the Washington theatre on Friday and Saturday will mark an unusual event In local photoplay annals. Without being heralded as the "greatest ever" or guaranteed to embody all the reforms and dogmas of civilization, the play will afford stirring scenes and a gripping interest that has seldom been reflected upon the screen. Its scenes are laid in San Francisco at a period just preceding the great earthquake and consequent fire. MURRAY A coincidence in connection with the screen version of "Broadway Jones," George M. Cohan's initial photoplay at the Murray tonight, is the fact that its director, Joe Kaufman was formerly associated with the star In his theatrical activities. Mr. Kaufman's success as a director of motion pictures has established him among the foremost producers of highclass screen plays in the country. Prior to his motion picture work he was affiliated with George M. Cohan in connection with various stage successes.

MURRETTE "The Price She Paid." with Miss Clara Kimball Young as the star, will be the Selznick-Pictures feature at the Murrette Theatre next Friday and Saturday. This photodrama of the life of a beautiful young society woman is from the Immensely popular novel by David Graham Phillips. It outlines the problems In the life of a young woman, used to luxurious surroundings, who finds herself almost without resources.

SQUEAKS

From the editor's swivel chair

This dally squeaking Is not accomplished without more or less friction. College boys are so playful. Occasionally they break a man's neck during the Initiation ceremonies. At last we have It. Germany Is allowing; her vast armies to be driven back in order to wear out the allies and exhaust their resources. But what will the folks at Berlin say when the English army arrives all exhausted and worn out. Since Wilhelm has not Informed his people of the approach of company, they won't be prepared to feed the poor exhausted creatures. . And Hueller being held In custody of local and federal authorities Is eating of the limited supply of the United States. The devious ways these aliens do have of defeating the United States now that we are at war. The weather we have with us always. We newspaper folks are such nice folks that when the secretary of a society or the press agent for a realty company asks us to do a favor by "putting a piece" in the paper, we thank them for the privilege.

CLOWNS GIVE BEST TO CREATE SPORT

It seems Incongruous that men of college training and Inventive genius should devote their lives to the promotion of frivolity, yet this Is what a real circus clown does. With the SellsFloto Circus, which comes to Richmond May 15, are forty energetic, intelligent and studious clowns, whose every thought is directed toward making multitudes laugh. In accomplishing this these clowns have made use of every science and every sport known under the sun. Punch and Judy were the first clowns. In the days of early kings an honored position was that of the court jester. The clowns with the Sells-Floto Shows are jesters to "His Majesty, the American Citizen." The court jester was a buffoon who promoted risabilitles by both action and word. His latter-day counterpart in the one-ring show was like

wise, but when circuses began to grow so big the human voice would not fill the tent the clown had to resort to pantomime to promote humor.
