The Latest Styles in Smart Hats

BUck satin is used for the foundation of this smart little turban. The bandeau of straw suggests that the brlmlsssness of the hat was an afterthought But the four carefully poised platrons of straw which at once hug and trim the satin foundation show how carefully calculated this little chapeau has been. Two quills stab the hat viciously and smartly. One is of soft claret color and the other Is blue. Fifty-seventh street has come to .be almost as well known as Fifth avenue.. Why? Because smart designers of brilliantly smart clothes have come there to live. Witness this hat of brown lisere which turns up sharply In front and gloides away to actual nothingness under the brilliantly poised wing of brown and pale yellow. This little turban of woven block and white straw Is at once knowing and unsophisticated and Is tremendously becoming to a piquant young face. It is made out of a great flap of straw, whose centre is completely sacrificed to charm. The stripes of straw climb high in clear black and white at one side and slink away into nothingness under a great ornament of coral ad green and violet and gold beads.

INDIANA PROFESSOR DESCRIBES AUSTRIA AS HAVING SUPPLIES

NEW YORK, April 23. Dr. E. I. Eastman, professor of surgery in Indiana University at Bloomington, has arrived In New York after being marooned for two months in Copenhagen on his way from Vienna where he spent six months as chief surgeon in n Austrian army hospital. To obtain passage to the United States, it was necessary for him to sign as ship's surgeon on a tanker for the voyage. Food conditions in Austria, Dr. Eastman said are not as bad as they have bpn painted.. While luxuries have disappeared the food supply seems to be sufficient. All People on Same Basis "Rich and poor are on the same bnsls." ho said. "The whole diet question has been revolutionized, with some interesting results. For Instance the health statistics of Vienna show a marked reduction in diseases of the stomach and intestines. Tuberculosis patients, however, have great difficulty in obtaining proper food and there is some anaemia among children." Dr. Eastman does not think the man power of Austria is near exhaustion, although he said he had seen wounded men more than fifty years of age and others as young as seventeen. The decoration of the Red Cross of the first class was conferred upon him by the Austrian government In recognition of his services.

Miss Theda Bara, who is soon to be seen on the screen In "The Tiger Woman," under the direction of William Fox, may be regarded by some as recluse. She has Invitations to attend both public and private functions the latter being the homes of her friends, but she rarely, If ever, accepts any of them. To many of those who know her fairly well, she Is much of a mystery. This may arise from the fact that she is not like the ordinary run of young women, but that she lives and has her being in a different atmosphere and sees life from a different angle. HERE'S PROOF

A Richmond Citizen Tells of His Experience. You have a right to doubt statements of people living far away but can you doubt Richmond endorsement? Read It: W. S. Henderson, 100 N. Nineteenth St., Richmond, says: "About three years ago I was in pretty bad shape from my back and kidneys. Several times I got down and could not do anything on. account of the sharp pains in the small of my back. The kidney secretions were too frequent in passage, causing me to get up as many as ten or twelve times at night. The secretions were also highly colored. -Doctors said I had lumbago. After I had used many medicines without being helped, I got Doan's Kidney Pills. I used three boxes and they cured me." Price 50c, at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy get Doan's Kidney Pills the same that cured Mr. Henderson. Foster-Milburu Co., Props., Buffalo, N. Y.

American Aviators Win High Regard By Service in Lafayette Squadron

GRAND HEADQUARTERS. BRITISH ARMY. FRENCH FRONT (Correspondent of Associated Press), April 23. The disappearance after an aerial engagement of Sergeant James R. Mac Connell, the American aviator, calls attention once more to the brilliant work of the Lafayette Squadron composed entirely of American volunteers except the two French officers in charge, Captain Georges Thenault and Lieutenant DeLage De Meux. Since Its formation last year the squadrilla, whose official designation is the "N124," has undergone some changes of personnel. The new men, however, are living well up to the traditions of those who have passed through its ranks, some of whom have made the "great sacrilce" for. France in return for the help she gave to America during the revolution, ' while others have had to retire owing to wounds or Injuries. ! , , Win Admiration of Comrades By their daring and skill the young Americans have won not only the admiration of their French comrades but also . the wholesome respect of the German airmen opposed to them. Up

to date at least thirty enemy machines are known to have fallen victims to the American squadrilla and it is probable more have been brought down over the German lines but without certain proof of their destruction no credit Is given to the aviator for these. The members of the corps, which is purely a fighting unit whose duty is

the . protection , of observation and bombarding squadrillas. live together In their oantanment at the Front more on the terms of clubmen interested In the same branch of sport than like a military body. ' In fact the combination is known as the "winged club." Many of the members hare been decorated with medals and crosses for, tholr exploits in Alsace, around Verdun and on the Comme. Their desire to be in the midst of the hottest fighting is generally gratified and the squadrilla Is always to be found In the vicinity of greatest activity.
