Perfect Gift." The Real Thtag."
"Heavens!" she. cried. , "I must hurry or we won't get married at all, and then Mrs. Smith will come to take it away again." Cecil ran, Into her bedroom to fetch her hat. "Adam, have you packed?" she called. "If not, you'd better let me. What will you take for this lengthy trip?":...;,.. .;. , . They were going f or . the ;'shortet honeymoon on record," to a' tiny village in Westfordshire where Cecil had once spent, as she said, "a day , In heaven" with her mother years before. "I'll do it now Robert, answered. He found himself turning hot all over at the girlish offer of help. In one hour Cecil would be his wife; they'd belong to one another until "death did them part." He felt, somehow, as though all the emotional part of his nature were asleep. . "Cecil is absolutely a dear," he said to himself miserably. "Why In Heaven's name, can't I fall In love with her? I want to, but I seem incapable of feeling anything deeply. I'll be good to her," he said again to himself. - He packed his bag quickly. They were going from Euston by a train leaving at three-thirty. Robert . had found a man to take his work for the afternoon. . - "Ready!" Cecil called. He found her waiting for him In the little sitting-room; white frock, white hat, white roses in her hands, and the most exquisite white shoes on her feet.
"Cecil, you look adorable!" he said impulsively. ' : .-. She Unshed beneath the shadow of the white hat. , . 4 "And you look topping,!, she replied. "Adam, do you know we're a couple of very i good-looking young things?" "I'm not young compared to you," he said, "even if I have, asserted, under your, direction, that "my, age Is twenty-eight." Mrs. Smith blessed them again as they went down the steps. "Seems to 'ave got over 'is hillnesa, all right," the lady on! the second floor remarked. "Bless you," said Mrs. Smith easily, "there weren't much wrong with im, I always 'ave thought; I always shall think as there was more In that little affair than met the heye. 'Idlng Mrs. Phib, that's wot I think; but it weren't no matter of mine. So long as people stays -respectable and nothin's proved against 'em, and they pays their rent, I'm satisfied; and I'm sure the pore dear colonel, if 'e did lift the elber a bit too free,' wouldn't never 'ave no friends as would be likely to disgrace neither 'im or me." The registry office was in Acton, and Robert's spirits- rose as they walked along. He glanced again at Cecil. She looked very , young and excited and pretty. A sudden humbleness filled him. He had been a selfish beast to have half regretted the marriage last night What had he, an unknown, un-vouched-for wanderer, to offer this
girl who brought him the marvelous gifts of youth and trust? He had not thought about it like that before. He had been grateful for what he had received, but had he ever realized bow much had been given to him? "Cecil," he said, "why do you trust me?" She looked at him; her eyes expressed surprise. .... "Well, you know, " she said naively, "you somehow Impress me as being straight; you . always , pay up everything you owe, and and you don't drink;, and then, you were a dear to me that night father died; and you look straight .you know, Adam. I believe you look what the lower classes call 'a 'steady young man.'" She laughed a little. "I suppose," she went on, "to a civilized, ordinary, un-Bohemian person like yourself, our marriage must seem rather weird. Three months .ago we didn't know, one another; then you arrived, a man without a memory. Do you hear, Adam? until you came I'd never had' any friends at alL" Father sometimes used to bring men home, but that was generally when he wasn't himself. . Then next morning he used to lecture me severely on associating with ill-bred people. So when you came, you see, and you weren't illbred, or anything particular, you made a tremendous difference in my life. And then, when father died,. I oh, I was glad that you had come, because I knew it meant I wouldn't be lonely. If you only knew how I dread loneli
ness, how I hate it!" she said vebehemently. She stopped for a moment "So there are lots of reasons why I trust ' you, 'and I'm glad" her voice sank a little "that we're going to be married." - . She slipped her hand Into Robert's and it was thus, hand In hand, that they entered the registry office. The registrar read the short civil service through as quickly as possible. He appeared to be suffering from hay fever. ; ' ' . "Sign here," be said, his voice bare-
