Think About Thts
To Men and Boys Turn in hosts to the farms
to help cultivate and harvest the vast crops im
peratively needed President Wilson.
. President Cites Law of Treason All persons in the United States, citizens.and
aliens, are warned in a proclamation by President Wilson that the government will prosecute all treasonable acts or attempts to shield traitors
or connive in their acts. - ' We have held since relations with Germany were broken off that the full power of the government must be exercised against any person who.plots or winks at plotting against the United States. The president in the past was lenient in his attitude toward persons who did not agree with his views, but he will not tolerate utterances and acts now that will jeopardize this country or assist its enemies. Sufficient warning has been given by the president to persons who are not absolutely loyal. If they still persist in saying treasonable utterances and in winking at disloyal acts, the government should step in and clap them into prison. There can be only one kind of loyalty in the United States, and that is full and absolute allegiance to the government. Loyalty that is less than that is treason." A traitor's place is in prison or before a firing squad. We do not want him to spread his nefarious work in our country. M t Grow Foodstuffs It is incomprehensible that many persons do not understand the gravitx,of the food situation in the United States. The problem of growing enough food for ourselves and the nations that depend on us for supplies is the most momentous one that the American nation has had to solve in a decade. Every man, woman and child in the United States is directly interested in it, for if crops fail, or we are unable to raise enough foodstuff, then every man, woman and child in the United States will suffer. We ask our readers to study the thoughts expressed in the following editorial taken from the New York American: : We are in this war, and we have got to win it. That is all there is to.that.. ; Victory in this war is not merely a matter of money or military material. Victory In this war IS mainly A MATTER OF FOOD SUPPLIES. Drive that down deep into yftur mind. Tho allies can hold the Germans and the Germans can hold the allies, so far as naval and military operations are concerned, for a long time. If both sides had plenty .of food, they might fight for five years to come. But neither side has anything like enough food. They are both pretty nearly at the end of the string. Tbe decisive blow we can strike at the German Empire is to feed the allies. That may sound easy, but it is going to be the hardest job of all.
3 That is because we have .little food to spare and can only produce a surplus above oar own necessities, by the swiftest organization of labor and definite mobilization of an agricultural army on the firing Una of the farms. , ; If we had time to. spare, that would not toe so hard. But time is short dangerously, almost desperately, short. If the allies are not stocked up with food inside of nine months, and Germany can hold out against her food shortage that Jong, the war may go against the allies. Besides, even if peace is made very soon, the SAME CONDITIONS OF WORLD HUNGER WILL EXIST. . - There will be no time for the returning soldiers to work at this year's crops and upon this year's crops the world must live all next year, until harvest time in the Fall. The onjy way in which the most dreadful famine ever known a famine that will cost more lives than this war itelf can be averted is for us TO TRIPLE AND QUADRUPLE OUR PRODUCTION OF FOODS THAT CAN BE PRODUCED QUICKLY. It is too late to do that with the cereal crops. They can be increased, of course, but they cannot be increased one-half, let alone doubled.
There is neither time, acreage, fertilizer, seed nor
labor enough to double the crops of wheat, oats, rye and
corn. But there are crops that can be quaarupiea ana
quintupled and sextupled. First of all. there are potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, peas, beets, turnips and pumpkins these last for cattle feed as well as human food. y Then there is a form of meat production that can be increased on every farm and carried on in every yard.
That is the production of chickens, geese, ducks and
their eggs.
To these there should be added tbe production of
Belgian rabbits or hares, as they are commonly called. They are most prolific breeders, come to a good weight rapidly, and are far superior to chickens for table use. It takes two years from breeding time to produce a young beet animal. But rabbits ripe for the table can be produced in four months from mating time.
It makes no difference about the comparative cost of
1,000 pounds of tbe rabbit meat and 1,000 pounds of beef. The factor that counts now is TIME, not money. Chickens, ducks and geese not only hatch and come to good weight very early, but those held in reserve maintain a steady supply of eggs the best all-'round animal food there is.
There should be country-wide organization, under
Government supervision and encouragement, for the increase of poultry and eggs. Government incubating stations should be established in every city, town and village, and young live chicks, ducklings and goslings given to families to raise. There is a common notion that ducks and geese require water. They grow just as fast and lay as many eggs if they never see water. With proper organization millions of pounds of waste such as grass in yards, scraps of food and bones thrown in garbage pails, leaves, tops and sk'ins of vegetables and all that kind of stuff can be converted into poultry food turned into meat and eggs instead of thrown away. Then, all the horses and mules that die and all the eld, worn-out animals that ought to die, can be used as poultry food. There are enough dead horses and mules buried or dragged to some out-of-the-way spot each day to feed millions of chickens and cooked horse meat mixed with; a cereal mash is the best chicken food. These may sound like minor matters, amid the clatter of military preparations. But the truth is that unless these minor matters are attended to the military- preparations will not get us anywhere. An army is just as strong as its FOOD SUPPLY, and not one bit stronger. Men who have not" plenty to eat cannot march, dig and fight. We must win this war if we are ever to hold up our heads again. v Ahd we will not win this war if we run out of food before the last battle is fought a :
Y. M. C. A. Campaign Special squads are making a canvass of the city to raise funds for the Y. M. C. A. The particular mission of the workers is well k'nown to the community. The Y. M. C. A. is an institution whose worth has been proved. It is an organized force for the moral uplifting of the city. It keeps the youths from going astray by offering them advantages that cannot be obtained elsewhere. For adults it offers attractions that make it deservedly popular. Those who are interested in the institution hope that it may exert a wider influence and remain an asset to the city. Contributors to the cause may rest assured that their money is being spent in a good cause.
Robinsons Circus Shows Here Soon
For the past two years "neutrality
has been a much used and abused
word. After almost constant associa
tlon with an average of three hundred
circus performers, of necessarily mix
ed nationalities, some of them genuine Americans, others foreign born, or, native born of foreign parents, I have come to the conclusion there ain't no
such animal as "Neutrality" around -these parts," said Prof. Dockeril,
amusement director of the John Robin' son"s Circus.
"With an organization so compounded," he continued, "where people of
varying sympathies were in close con
tact night and day for months there was bound to be some friction since
the outbreak of European hostilities An argument beginning in the dress
ing room would usually be carried into the arena in the form of scowling glances and jerky movements Instead
of the smiles and graceful gestures, necessary to get what is called "in
touch" with an audience. And in justification I want to remark that it isn't
in human nature to feel "neutral" on any subject. Human being are governed by sentiment whether at a horse-

All are seniors in agriculture and are being sent out as temporary county agents to counties to which are at present without the aid of an agricultural adviser. Doctor Says huxated Iron Will Increase Strength of Delicate People 100 in Ten Days
In many instances Persons have suffered untold agony for years doctoring for nerveus weakness, stomach, liver or kidney disease or some other ailment when their real trouble was lack of iron in the blood. How to tell. New York, N. Y. In a recent discourse Dr. E. Sauer, a Boston physician who has studied widely both in this country and In great European medical institutions, said: "If you were to make an actual blood test on all people who are ill you would probably be greatly astonished at the exceedingly large number who lack iron and who are ill for no other reason than the lack of iron. The moment iron is supplied all their multitude of dangerous symptoms disappear. Without iron the blood at once loses the power to change food into living tissue and therefore nothing you eat does you any gcod; you don't get the strength out of it. Your food merely passes through your system like corn through a mill with the rollers so wide apart that the mill can't grind. As a result of this continuous blood and nerve starvation, people become generally weakened, nervous and all run down and frequently develop all sorts of conditions. One is too thin; another is burdened with unhealthy fat; some are so weak they can hardly walk; some think they have dyspepsia, kidney or liver trouble; some can't sleep at night, others are sleepy and tired all day; some fussy and irritable; some skinny and bloodless, but all lack physical power and endurance. In such cases, it is worse than foolishness to take stimulating medicines or naracotic drugs, which only whip up your fagging vital powers for the moment, maybe at the expense of your life later on. No matter what any one tells you, If you are not strong and well you owe it to yourself to make the following test. See how long you can work or how far you can walk without becoming tired. Next take two five- grain tablets of ordinary nuxated Iron three
times per day after meals for two weeks. Then test your strength again and see for yourself how much you
have gained. I have seen dozens of nervous run down people who were ailing all the time double, and even triple their strength and endurance and entirely get rid of their symptoms of dyspepsia, liver and other troubles in from ten . to fourteen day's time simply by taking iron in the proper form, and this, after they had in some cases been doctoring for months without obtaining any benefit. You can talk as you please about all the wonders wrought by new remedies, but when you come down to hard facts there is nothing like good old iron to put color in your cheeks and good sound, healthy flesh on your bones. U is also a great nerve and stomach strengthener and the best blood builder In the world. The only trouble was that the old forms of inorganic iron like tincture of iron, iron acetate.
etc., often ruined people's teeth, upset !
their stomachs and were not assimilated and for these reasons they frequently did more harm than good. But with the discovery of the newer forms of organic iron all this has been overcome. Nuxated Iron for example. Is pleasant to take, does not injure the teeth and is almost immediately beneficial. , NOTE The manufacturer of Nuxated Iron have such unbounded confidence in its potency that they authorize the announcement that they wi!T forfeit $100.00 to any Charitable Institution if they cannot take any man or woman under sixty who lacks iron and increase their strength 100 per cent or over in four weeks' time, provided they have no serious organic trouble. Also they will refund your money in any case ta which Nuxated Iron does not at least double your strength in ten days' time. It is dispensed in this city by Conkey Drug Co., Thistlethwaite Drug Stores and all good druggists. Adv. -
