Oxford Street . was ablaze with illuminations for the coronation every shop and house was brilliantly lighted. ' ; - When the block opened the car spurted forward to enter Langham Place. The taxi just missed the chance, and was delayed a little longer. Cursing, Dosser leaned out of the window and shouted, at the driver. The change when the cab entered Langham Place was instantaneous. , No illuminations were seen there, and the darkness after the blaze 'in Oxford Street was intense. The car, returning, passed them in their taxi and stopped outside Queen's Hall, in obedience to Dosser's directions. Ocrde's house was Just beyond the Jutting-out corner that begin Portland Place proper, and was not visible from where they were.' The inspector alighted noiselessly and crouched on the far side of the cab." Dosser, throwing the driver two half-crowns, turned away. "Fare one ' and ten," grinned the man Joyfully as he put down the taximeter and prepared to turn round. . The inspector had counted on Dos ser having to wait for the door to be opened; therefore, he did not. hurry greatly. As he walked out, past the jutting part, Into the broad, open street, some one ran past him; and then stopped, clutching him madly.., "My Gawd! my Gawd!" the hoarse eice stammered; '"e's 'anglng there I didn't see it was dark, and as I went up the steps 'is feet knocked against my face. I meant to do 'im.in but I I Those soft, swinging feet Gawd 'elp me! They touched me,.l tell yer!" "Here, hold up!" the inspector said.
Richmond Astonished by Merchant's. Story A merchant relates the following;, "For years I could not sleep without turning every hour. Whatever I ate caused gas and sourness. Also had stomach catarrh. ONE SPOONFUL buckthorn bark, glycerine, etc., as mixed in Adler i-ka relieved me JNSTANTLY." Because Adler-i-ka flushes the ENTIRE alimentary tract it 'relieves ANY CASE constipation, sour Btomach or gas and prevents appendicitis. It has QUICKEST action of anything we ever sold.- Clem Thistlethwalte. Adv.
He flashed his electric torch on to the man clinging to him."Dosser!" he said sharply, i . "I , meant to, do 'im in, but it was with a clean stroke. . I'd have fought 'im fair," the high, hysterical voice went ou. ' i .- . .The inspector impatiently drew out his flask. : "Here, drink," he said, "and stop tnat noise. You can come with me." The words seemed to restore Dosser's control and he straightened up. "It's Gorde," he said; '"e's 'anglng there dead!" The inspector began to run. ' "I've been listening to you, and if we'd cut him ' down he might have lived," he . jerked out angrily. But be knew he was wrong as soon as his eyes fell upon: that dark .form hanging in the darkness. No man's head drooped like that if death had not been instantaneous. The rope had lengthened and the fall, had broken the dead man's backbone at the neck. , The inspector " blew his whistle.
-There came the sound of running feet.
otner policemen arrived within two minutes. ; "Lanterns," the inspector ordered; "there, is a, man hanging dead from the. balcony. rail." , Already a little crowd was gatherlng. Why had there been sufficient strain upon it to tighten sufficiently to strangle him? His body hung limply, his head resting upon his breast: his fair hair had fallen upon his face. Hls white shirt gaped where the effort had strained it. - . The inspector hammered ' on the door. There was no answer. A gas burned dimly behind the glass fanlight. " " He hammered again, while the crowd had grown immense. A young man, strolling leisurely by in evening dress, came up and asked what had happened. A dozen eager voices told him, a dozen hands pointed at the hanging man; two policemen had f scaled the pillar, and were en the balcony, while two were waiting to receive the body when the rope should be cut. The young man, who was a journalist on a big daily, watched eagerly; then, tossing a boy a sovereign, seized his bicycle from him and rode off at breakneck speed to Fleet Street.
