One of the Season's Novelties
"
Thfl chinning frock is one of the best novelties of a season that delights in novelty. The skirt is of Qhina ftilk with a suggestion of pegtop and more than a suggestion of shirring. The blouse is of cross-barred pique banded in the silk to indicate its speaking acquaintance with the skirt. The coat is of dull green cretone patterned in gold and blue, and the flower wreath on the big hat amiably echoes this color scheme.
SQUEAKS
From the editor's swivel chair
Did you ever notice that the fellow vlio reads the paper out loud in the barber shop generally pronounces half the words wrong? He belongs to the same family aa the man who tells you what's coming next in the movies and how it all ends before the first reel is half unwound. How much nicer it would have been to stage this little campaign to increase food production without going into war. As if war were not bad enough, the weather man has to try to spoil things by dumping in a consignment of cold weather on top of the budding fruit Secretary Redfield announces there will not be a shortage of tin. We suppose that means it will still be possible to get "canned." The imitator Is always at least one rtep behind. Some persons who owe the most to the U. S. give the least and give it grudgingly. AM persons who would like free
transportation to Kaiserland raise their hands. Richmond may be slow in getting started but once underway there is no stopping her. Richmond la developing a substaintlal kind of patriotism that will weigh heavily on the side of the U. S. After riding on some Interurban.cars In Northern Indiana we have decided we are immune from seasickness. FINISH ARGUMENT IN GOODWIN CASE

TUBERCULOSIS
Continued From Page One. men 70, 80, and even 90 years old, as usually circumstances which would cause younger persons to contract consumption would kill the aged and infirm outright. Dr. Cailleux and Dr. Caquille explained that it was exceedingly difficult to investigate the matter, as the mentality of the refugees had been badly shaken through their hardships and never was of the highest quality. "The Germans sent most of the more intelligent people back to Germany in their various slave raids,"
THEY WERE RUNDOWN How often we hear it said of a man or woman that "they were rundown in health " which accounts f or their present sickness. For that reason it is important that when you find you tire easily, when your nerves are troublesome or your work is irksome, you should strengthen your system immediately with the blood-enriching, tissue-build-in? food in Scott's Emulsion which

oil ana is free from alcohol. . Saatt a Bswa, ttaaliM, N. J. lt-S
Dr, Cailleux explained, "so that, these lefugees never were of the highest class mentally, and since their frightful experiences their ' Intellects have been more shattered than ever." "Too bad," Dr. Beebe," added Dr. Caquille, "that you did not get here sooner, as nearly all the tuberculosis cases turned into quick consumption and the victims died Off like flies." All Tell Same 8tory '- Dr. Beebe talked with refugees in the: hospitals and In the Elliott Fitch Shepard home, and all who bad been vaccinated told substantially the same story; how the German doctors, pretending friendliness toward them, declared that all France was swept by a wave of smallpox, that the French doctors lacked vaccine, and that they, the Germans, would vaccinate ' the people before retreating, not leaving them a prey to the pestilence which would follow the arrival of the French troops. Slow Death for, Refugees ."There Is no use pettifogging in arguing about whether the Germans really intended to Inoculate these people with tuberculosis," Dr. Beebe said. "Such a thing, as I said, is impossible to prove now. However, that is a small matter, relatively speaking, as anyone, without being a doctor, can see plainly enough what they have done to these people. , "Sending off these aged, infirm, maimed, and insane and tiny chfllren, with sick mothers, is unspeakeable. Very few of these aged people will
survive. the shock of being torn from their lifelong homes after seeing the Germans destroy all '.their property and carry off their loved ones. It would have been almost more humane if the Germans had killed. them where they were." Dr. Beebe Is a native of Springfield, Mass., and graduated from Harvard in 1896 and from the medical school In 1900. He practiced in Boston , until two years ago, coming abroad as a bacteriologist for the British Red Cross and being stationed at Calais. He has been with the American ambulance hospital at Neuilly as a pathologist for a year and a half.Used by special permission of the New York World.
