bulletin of Chicago credits the drain

age canal for a pronounced decrease

in the city's death rate from typhoia fever. The total number of deaths in the city from typhoid fever for the last fourteen years is given as 4,2029. In 1893 before the canal was opened, the death rate from the disease was 173.3 to 100.000 people. In 1916 it was 5.16. The effect of the canal is to carry the drainage away from the city's water supply in Lake Michigan to the Mississippi river.
