and no prospect of possessing means, by which to support her. "I've been a fcol," he thought bit. terly, " and yet what else could I have done?" The memory of Cecil's caresses touched him not at all, for he was not In love with her. Until her confession to him he had never thought of love In connection with her. - He was sincerely fond of her; he was grateful to her, but that was all. His little room, with Its untidy, crumpled bed, its cheap cracked little glaes. and dusty, discolored curtains offended him. He walked, after having taken off his shoes, lest he should wake up Cecil, up and down the small space. Through the little window, open to its fullest extent, the hot night air came in. A woman was singing some horrible music-hall song in a hoarse voice down the street, and a man wheeling a barrow was crying his wares. It was all sordid, soiled, endlessly antagonistic to his every sense. A sudden strong repulsion shook blm. For the first time since his arrival at the place he felt he hated the cheap, common ' food, the empty, lounging life even the shiftless, kindly people who had housed and fed him. Savagely he thrust bis hands into his pockets.
"I'm ungrateful beastly I don t care. I want to get away." Temptation stole into his brain. Why shouldn't he slip out into that hot street and then walk away and away until he reached the cool fields somewhere? What matter If he had n6 food no place to lodge, he was strong he could work. His weary mind seized on the idea. Definitely and for the first time since his illness his brain worked normally. He could not remember the life before
his operation, but as he had grown
stronger, ' his memory for Immediate Incidents and affairs had also grown stronger. ' ' He began to count his money by the light cast into his room from the lamp on the opposite side of the road. Fifteen pounds and a few shillings! . Feverishly he gathered together his things, a few cheap shirts and collars and his brush.' He wanted a piece of brown paper. ' There was a little bit behind the wasbstand. He stooped down to get It. When he got up he found himself face to fate with Cecil. Her eyes were fixed on the little heap of clothes on the bed. "Adam," fine said In almost a whisper, "what Is it? You have been walking up and down and talking to yourself for ages. At first I thought, perhaps, you' were reading aloud, and then I was frightened lest you should be ill,' so I-H:ome in What are you doing? Adam, are you packing?" She looked, in her shabby little dressing gown with her hair tumbling on her shoulders, very little and young. . .
Robert felt he was a coward a man
who wanted to go back on hi3 word. He wanted to say these things, to attempt to explain his mood of the night, but he found his lips dry against bis tongue.

, Harden lit a cigarette thoughtfully, "Of course," he said, "I can do nothing officially. These secret sects are not recognized by us at all. But all th3t I can do I will. His opportune for that was In the operatingtinder. " ,' "V. V- should he trouble to murder a !r?t nan a man with no memory?" Lsdy Tcrrens said bitterly. Lord Harden rose.' , ' "! must go," he paid regretfuily -JI with I could help you more. Of courts. 'tils account of the history of t'je Mahometan must remain a cen9ifnce between us. I only obtained it with difficulty." Lady Torrens nodded gravel.-. "There is more in this than we know of as yet. my friend," she said. "I thank you for youY help. I promise ro'i that your confidence shall not be violated."' CHAPTER XV Engaged! Robert, in his bedroom that night, gave himself furiously to thought. He had become engaged to a girl who loved him, and who had for no reward nursed him back to life, and who was, moreover, the one being In all the world whom he really, knew. It was obviously Impossible he had thought of that before for him to go on indefinitely living with the Jameses. For one thing his little 6tock of money was diminishing. Yet be had asked a girl to marry him he, a man without any money, any prospects, any position, without even a memory. It was not only tragic; it was grotesque.
' He pressed his hands to his forebead. God! If he could remember something $x'...s faint clue that would, tell him what, who he had been once where he had lived what he bad done for a living! That thought pulled him up. It is not a usual thing for any man to offer a girl marriage if he has no means

Chalmers puts quality materials and quality workmansMp into every piece of every Chalmers car. Therein lies the difference between the Chalmers and most other cars.
Here arc three parta out of thousands in the chassis. They are hidden moving parts of the motor the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons. Chalmers makes them of extraordinary materials with extraordinary care and thoroughness. One-Piece Crankshaft The crankshaft is drop-forged from heat treated carbon steel in a single piece. . Balancing weights are integral with the shaft. The shaft is 2 inches in diameter. Sturdy, but not heavy. Rigid. Strong. It is balanced while rotating at a fast rate of speed, on a unique machine. This helps you to understand why the Chalmers motor is so smooth.
Connecting Rods Strong, Light Connecting rods , are designed to secure rigidity and lightness. They are made of special carbon steel. Are unusually strong and dependable. Each rod weighs only 41 ounces. Yet they will withstand greater stress and strain than some connecting rods weighing almost twice as much. Light Weight Pistons Chalmers pistons are of Lynite. A light and 'tough metal, about $ the weight of cast iron. 'Chalmers pistons reduce the strain on the bearings. They insure the marvelous Chalmers smoothness. They make possible the remarkable Chalmers power.
All of the above means quality. The hind of quality you need in the ear yon bay, and the hind of quality you GET in the Chalmere
