Musical Interests Seek Common Ground For Formation of Community Center
By FORREST DAVIS There are several conditions which must exist before a community musical organization in Richmond can be formed successfully. They can be listed as follows: , Sufficient musical interest to demand and support such an organization must be roused; There must be harmony among the leading musical forces in the community. Now there are contending elements, which, seemingly are as remotely-separated as the poles; Must Submerge Personal Interest. Individuals must submerge personal interest, no matter how much or how little they have done for music in the past. Fidelity to the cause of good music gives no man lief to assume dominance of a community's musical force; All musical interests in the community must be enlisted. These include students, music-lovers and clubs osjmposed of such. Then there are the commercial musical interests. These are dealers in talking machines, pianos, etc., and music teachers. They all must work together harmoniously. A Factional Community Organization la no Community Organization at All. This fact has been established in other centers where the community Ideal has been accepted. In an Ohio city one man has wrested control of a community musical body from the somnolent directors. He has arranged a concert course for next year which obviously is selfish. It is designed to throttle another musical organization, truly as representative of the community spirit. A meeting has been called by R. B. Jones, of the Jones Hardward company, for next Tuesday evening in Reid Memorial church. At this meeting, which, I am told is open to all persons who truly are interested in Richmond's musical development, sentiment will be sounded to see whether a community organization is practicable. Mr. Jones has invited a number of persons to this meeting and he expects a free and open discussion of the situation in Richmond. Those persons who have been working for the community ideal have met
a certain amount of misunderstanding of the purposes and spirit of the plan. Some Friction Exists. In the minds of some persons a community organization should be organized from among the commercial interests of the city exclusively. Others favor substituting a small committee or board, self-chosen, for a community organization, which would include all sections, interests and organizations. Still others can conceive of no musical organization which does not include themselves as moving spirits, as dominating forces. To them a community organization is a vehicle' for self-glorification. There is friction in Richmond between verious musical forces. That fact is so well known It does not need comment and so obvious it cannot be blinked. These lines are being written in the hope that they may present the situation in concrete form for those persons whose attitudes and actions will determine the formation of a community organization. It is the devout hope of the writer of these lines that the community may be united musically and an organization may be formed to express the unit's spirit. '
EARLHAM TRUSTEES WILL ACT SLOWLY
Earlham trustees have taken . no steps yet to obtain a successor to Dr. Robert L. Kelly, who resigned yesterday from presidency of the college to accept a post with the Federal Council of Churches. Dr. Kelly also is secretary of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends. He will be able to hold this position after he removes to Chicago. A successor to him probably will be chosen next fall. The college trustees are in little hurry to select a successor to Dr. Kelly. The chair probably will be filled before school opens in September.

NEW ALBANY
Continued From Page One. across the river, and from Jeffersonville only three miles away, together with officers from the Indiana state reformatory assisted in maintaining order. Organized Relief Follows The chaos which came in the wake of the storm was quickly succeeded by organized efforts to assist those in need of help. A large relief fund was raised at a hurridly gathered meeting or citizens at the city hall and committees appointed to undertake the work of relieving those whose homes had been destroyed. This fund was increased by a contribution from the board of trade of Louisville, and today further subscriptions were being added. The injured soon overflowed the one public hospital of the city and others were taken to the Young Men's Christion association and to private homes. Every available physician In New Albany was called into service, together with others from Louisville and Jeffersonville. Members of the staffs of Louisville hospitals were hurried to the scene and the facilities of the institutions themselves were offered. Damage Covers Several Miles Damage done by the wind extended
several miles into the country, .particularly along the Corydon Pike. Many houses and barns were unroofed or demolished and - several persons were Injured. Along the Charleston road the damage was also heavy. An unidentified young man and woman
driving toward New Albany - were hurled over a fence Into a nearby eld and killed. . No accurate estimate of the property damage In and about the immediate vicinity of New Albany has been possible but it is expected the loss will be upwards of a million dollars.
