The car J was throbbing close at hand; it had only one small head lamp alight, and. that lit the stretch 4 of road far in advance of Dosser. ' He listened for footsteps. He heard none.. , , t , He ran out and slipped behind the car. ' "Bit of a spree," he thought gleefully. . : Two tall men come out, one In ordinary evening dress. Dosser saw the gleam of his white shirt front. Then he almost cried aloud. The man spoke, and the voice was the voice of Sir Maline Gorde. "Deen," it said. "Deen," answered the driver of the car.- Sir Maline got in, and the man accompanying him seated himself beside the driver. No one in the car noticed a little man slink off into the shadows. Dosser was round at Clarges Street at seven-thirty. "Could he see her ladyship It was most important?" "Good 'evins, man, we are 'ardly in our first sleep!" the cook told him. "We weren't 'ome till 'alf past two foreign office reception. You might as weli ask to see his lordship, 'oo's been resting in the vault for the last ten years." "Look 're!" Dosser said earnestly, "I've got to see her if you understand." "Well, keep up your spirit," the cook answered, " and we'll see what can be done through Miss Chann, her maid." "Tell the man to speak through the private telephone," Lady Torrens ordered. She listened to the hoarse voice speaking over the wire, her old face grim and eager and after breakfast she rang up the minister for Indian affairs, who happened to be a friend of hers, and asked him to lunch with her that day: He accepted the invitation at once. Dosser hung about all day in the little back street in Soho; but no one came to fetch the green envelope. In the flat at Knightsbridge Tony Bramham was lying seriously ill, and had for the time forgotten even the need of money. CHAPTER XIII A Changed Name At the end of the first month's stay Robert had settled down completely. After Cecilia's first amazed recognition of his absolute lack of memory

she had easily accommodated herself to the new order of things. The question in her. mind had been: "Was Robert deceiving her, for his own purposes of concealment, when he denied all knowledge of his home and former movements, or was he really suffering from' some illness of the mind?" Possessing an extremely easy-going character, she decided comfortably to give him the benefit of the doubt. It was very pleasant to have Robert to go about with, or rather to take about. He was amusing, he belonged to her own class, from which 6he was, !t was true, an outcast, but to which one side of her leaned irresistibly, and he was a friend. She had never been able to consider the various cosmospolitan artists, who sometimes came to see her father, in that light. Colonel James, supremely content by reason of the added comforts the extra money allowed, questioned nothing. "I think I will christen you 'Adam,' " Cecil said gaily, "as you are the first man we ever had to stay with us, and as you came, you must confess, rather unexpectedly into my Eden!" "Right," Robert said cheerfully. He was rather pale and not very

Spring had come, and even in Woodstock Road it insisted on making its appearance. ! At the end of the first week In May the little lilac-tree which bloomed unhappily in the back garden of the next house proudly showed a large bunch of tassel ey buds. Cecil, leaning! out of the window, showed the sweet marvel to Robert.

"Let's go out," he suggested, the park. To be continued

Five of Family Die Recently

Five members of one immediate family, died within the last four months and each of the four was near the four score year mark. They were James C. Knox, his sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Knox Horn, John Knox, Mrs. John Knox and Mrs. Harriet Knox Bowen. All of these excepting Mrs. Bowen lived near Spartanburg, Ind. She lived at Winchester, Ind., and she was buried today at Spartanburg. The same minister preached the

color. Above his brown eyebrows it looked curiously light. His mustache he bad absently shaved off one morning. Cecil had once scanned the papers to see If there was any mention of a missing man, but she had seen nothing, and after a few mornings she had

ceased to look. Life slid along very

easily in the rather grimy little back street. On the pound a week which Robert contributed they lived, as Cecil put it, "regally." She had at once rescued her shoes, and she even, on the accumulated savings of the pound in four weeks, bought a second pair.
