CHAPTBli XH On the Trail All laid the letter, in its square, thickt 4jray envelope beside bis masted. Sir Maline's eyes narrowed a little, his hand opening the letter seemed to tremble slightly. "When;'' he ashed in the vernaeulaf. "Tonight three hears before dawBi" "So be it;" ' The empty sheet of paper empty save for one myetie figure, wag burned, and Sir" Maiine prepared to go about his day's work: At six when be returned the footman answered the doofj ' "Has All gone out?' "Yes, Sir Maiine I went . off quite early this afternoon.".... "I shall require you to help me dress in half an hour's time," Bald his master as he passed into his study; From a locked drawer he drew oat a thin book. The leaves were of the thinnest peper, end each page contained a record of his work and the sums he had received. He carefully brought It up to date, then, unlocking still another drawer, drew out a long silken robe, unwound a turban end ether articles of native apparel. ......'. These he packed, with the book, in to a small bag. He locked It, and then walked slowly up-stairs into his dressing-room. He dined alone, and after dinner went into the drawing-room, where he sat down at the piano and began to play. He possessed a marvelous touch. He played on and on, his white face lifted, his black eyes filled with the light almost of ecstasy. The. clock struck ten. Abruptly he rose. He went down to the study and rang for tho footman. "My coat and hat; and get me a taxi." ' To the driver he gave an address in the southwestern district. : The mac stopped at the corner of Prince's Gate and Oorde got out. A little lower down tho wide street ft car was waiting. After the taxi had driven off Gorde walked quickly toward it. "Deen" (the faith). Oorde said in a scarcely audible voice to the man at the driving-wheel. "Deen," he muttered in response. Gorde got in, and the car, traveling very fast, drove off toward Piccadilly. It turned at Trafalgar Square, and going round by the Coliseum, made its way into one of the little streets that He on the fringe of Soho. Here, as far away from a lamp as possible, it stopped, and its passenger, getting out, walked swiftly away, and was almost at once lost to sight in the shifting shadows and sudden turnings. Gorde, still carrying his bag, walked on until he reached a little street bisected by;. two others, -in -the heart of Soho. He was now limping, and his soft, black hat was crushed over his face. At last he stopped by a little, old house and knocked. The door opened an inch. "Deen," he muttered. The door opened w idor, and the man holding it bowed down to the

ground: He looked in the dim light, either a laaeej" or half-breed. Without speaking be walked forward, followed by Gorde, and down some rickety, wooden steps. The place smelted damp and uninhabited: At the bottota'of some steps there was a dopr: The man pusb.ed it gently, flight of steps leading obviously underground: At the bottom of this second flight there was a small, square roeht; The man, with a deen obeisance, took Gqrde'B bag from him and unpacked it: Then, still in silence, helped the newcomer to' robe himself. Finally, it waa a wonderful and intensely Impressive figure which, walking slowly, advanced to a door at the end of the little room. To be continued

as Yon Do a Watch

Compare two watches. They may look exactly aCke. They may be equal in diameter and thickness. They may weih the same. Perhaps your eye can't distinguish any difference between the gold In the two. One may seem to keep as good time as the other. Big Differences There Yet there may be a vast difference. One may be a Tiffany Swiss and the other a non-descript. If you trust only to an off hand examination you may make a bad mistake in your choice. - True of Automobiles The same is true of automobiles. Some other car may closely resemble a Chalmers. It may weigh about the same. Have about the same wheel base. The paint may look more ' or less alike at first glance. . Yet there may be a vast difference. Differences you can discover only by the closest scrutiny and comparison. Go Deep If you are to get the correct idea of the Chalmers, you must go beneath the surface. There the big, Important differences lie. Differences in materials. Differences in methods of building. Differences in 'quality of workmanship. To look only at the exterior of the Chalmers you wouldn't discover that the gears and shafts 'of the transmission are of crucible nickel steel, case hardened . and carefully heat treated.

Solid OnePicct Shaft

You wouldn't discover that the crankshaft f s a single sturdy shaft of drop-forged heat-treated carbon steel. Nor would you discover that the Chalmers pistons are die cast from Lynite, a special aluminum alloy, and weigh only 12 ounces each. Deep-Lging Differences To glance at the body you wouldn't realize that the body frame is built with such great care from select ash. That this is covered by one-piece, welded sheet steel. Nor that the springs in the upholstery are of an extraordinary spring steel. Nor that the frame of the chassis is of carbon steel, 5 inches deep and H of an inch thick. With flanges 2 inches wide. And with three strong cross members and reinforcing plates. Be Deliberate So when you examine the Chalmers don't look hastily. That's unfair to the car and unfair to yourself. Some things you don't realize when you glance at the 7-passenger Chalmers: 12i-ounce Lynite piston. -Crankshaft balanced while in motion. Cylinders and crank case cast in a unit. Timken axles built to Chalmers design. Economical intake manifold Chrome nickel driving shaft. Nickel steel differential gears hemt-treated to secure hardness and toughness. And many other important points of superior

All of the above means quality the kind of quality you need in the car you buy, and the kind of quality you GET in the Chalmers.
