RICHMOND, THE AGGRESSOR, FAILS TO MAKE MANY SHOTS COUNT; ROCHESTER TAKES GAME BY 26-21

BY FRANK DUNING BLOOMINGTON. Ind., March 17. Rochester high school basketball team considered by many critics as the best bet for the state title eliminated Richmond from the state lists this mornins. The score 26 to 21 does not indicate fairly the closeness of the contest. Richmond lost because of its inability to hit. the baskets. The basket shooting of the Quakers was pitiful. On the other hand Rochester made Its few shots count. - . Richmond was the aggressor and was in the lead throughout the greater part of the first half. Four goal shots by Arnold, brought Rochester up and past the Quakers. The score at the end of the first half was 1$ to 8, Rochester. Richmond more than held its own in the final, two thirds of this period was played beneath Rochester's goal. Coach Lyboult made ono substitution toward the close of the game. O'Neal was taken out in favor of Simmons. The crowd of 3,000 was with Richmond. The speed, class and sportsmanship of the team appealed. Rochester de-

Looking Through the Hoops

WITH FRANK DUNING

FLASHES FROM THE SIDELINES Neutrality was impossible last night in the thriller staged by Martinsville and Bloomlngton. A field goal by South of Martinsville after five minutes of overtime sent Bloomlngton to the showers for keeps. The rooter's delegation which followed the local team watched the massacre of Wingate by Rochester yesterday morning with considerable trepidation. With Richmond stacked . against Rochester we felt that the Quakers were to be given a test with a team of championship calibre. The nervens tension told on the girl rooters many of whom broke down openly and cried when the last whistle indicated that Richmond was out of the scrap. Our delegation found considerable consolation in the result of the MuncieRokomo game last night. At least, Muncie did not get any further than the locals. ' Wingate was a disappointment. Reputation was about all the team had In comparison with Rochester.

Lebanon looks to be a contender after 'coming through the fray with Tralfalgar by 34-11. "And there are about 200 rooters here from the upstate town who hold the same opinion.

. Most of the 3,400 spectators wondered how Rockville got into the lists after seeing Emerson of Gary romp away with the game.

The crop of dark horses is missing this year. Apparently the dopesters were not far wrong. Before play started this morning, Rochester, Kokomo, Lebanon and Martinsville were the best bets.

Richmond has no alibis, the boys played basketball.

Playing on the Coliseum rink tonight Newcastle and Richmond will bring the 1917 roller polo season of the Indiana State league to a close. Richmond and Muncie are both on the brink of oblivion'. . The recent withdrawal of Indianapolis fro the circuit left the yawning cellar ready to swallow up either of these teams which had felt pretty safe as long as the Indians were holding that berth. Muncie has had her last chance. Richmond has hers tonight. To lose means that the locals will claim undisputed possession of the most lowly position in the threesome. If Richmond , wins, Muncie must suffer the disgrace of last place. NEWCASTLE REPEATS STORY MUNCIE, Ind.. March 17. Muncie was forced to finish under 'the halfway percentage mark last night when the Newcastle champion polo team made away with another game. FAILS TO PICK SLATE

The nominating committee of .the Commercial club was unable to pick a slate in a meeting yesterday evening and another will be held the first of the week.

Captain Sox intimates that Cyclone Duggan and his flowers of the Rose city have a surprise in store for them at the Coliseum tonight. It's win tonight or finish in last place for Richmond and it's almost a certainty that that honor will rest with Muncie. With Bob Griffith and Big Fred Jean in. the line-up that Muncie collection of players should give Newcastle something that regular I. S. L. teams have failed to do. Muncie's offensives failed to get anything by Blondey Hueffner last night Houston and Harold were- the only men who worried the big Swede. DuFresnes and Doherty maintained the reputation of the Newcastle team last night. Both were called for fouls by Referee Thompson. It's about time some ardent fan began doping out Richmond's chances to finish at the head of the I. S. L. next year. In the meantime a big crowd will be on hand tonight to see the Quakers throw a wet blanket over that blaze of glory with which Newcastle is expecting to finish the season.
