lIC ZEPPELIN BROUGHT DOWN BY FRENCHMEN
(By Associated Press) Military operations are dally assuming greater scope and importance. The chief Interest today is centered la the report of the capture of Bapaume by the British. This has been the object of the British drive on the Franko- Belgian front which started several weeks ago. Berlin admitted withdrawing in this section but did not mention the loss of Bapaumo. The Germans on the Franko-Bel-gian front are continuing their retirement and are extending it to new sectors. They are carrying it far south of Bapaume and have made at least a beginning on the drawing in of their lines at the point where they have been nearest to Paris west of Roye. Berlin Admits Slight Loss The Berlin .announcement reports the occupation by the French of trenches between Beaudraignes and Lasslgny ifl this sector which the Germans had abandoned "according to plans."
The distance between these two places is about five miles. The French are continuing their attacks near Manostlr. in which sector the German report admitted they had made some successes. . French artilleryists today performed'the feat of bringing down a ZeppaHn which was flying over their trenches. The airship was broken in two by its fall. All the ocfiupants were either burned to death or were shot and killed. Tendon dispatches indicate a Zeppelin raid on that city but give no bint as to the damage done, if any, or any result of the raid. An official statement from London last night reported a raid over the southeastern counties which was still In progress when the statement was made. Bombs had been dropped in the county of Kent. '. . 75 WOMEN ATTEND POLITICAL MEETING FOR FOURTH WARD First of a series of ward meetings to acquaint women with issues of the municipal campaign was held last night for women of the Fourth ward
in K. of P. temple. . Three candidates spoke. They were J. J. Evans and J. V. Schneider, Republican candidates for councilman-at-large, and Benjamin Bulla, Republican candidate for council from the Fourth ward. Miss Esther Griffin White presided and explained the plan for ward meetings and precinct organizationOther, talks were made by Mrs. J. A. Walls, Annette Edmunds, Anna Finfrock and Mrs. Elizabeth Haughton, of Texas, who is visiting in Richmond. Mary Canby and Margaret Gentle distributed suffrage literature. Music was furnished by the Quaker Girls' Quartet, composed of Mrs. Glen Dennis Mildred Edwards, Gertrude Clark and Mary u Butler. , Mrs. Dennis played a piano solo. About 75 women attended.
Many Persons Shed Tears When Told of Basketball Team's Defeat
Copious tears were shed in Richmond this morning when the news, finally leaked from Bloomington that the high school basketball team had gone; down to defeat before Rochester.;. Neither was the crying confined to the high school girls. Grown women indulged in this favorite heart, balm of the tender sex. ' Hopes had been -built so high -that people informed f the score" over the .telephone refused to believe it. The story had to be repeated time and time again to the same persons. , Some of the more enthusiastic took it for granted that Richmond ' had won and cheered when they heard that the score was 26-21, buttheir joy was short lived as their mistaken impression was soon rectified. Long before the game was over The Palladium office was besieged with telephone calls coming in at the rate of .ten 'a minute. Men and women and children wanted to know the result Nobody cared about the result of the strike. The calls came in Incessantly until noon. "
Asks Richmond to Give Money For Road Signs
W. P. Simpson, Kansas City, Mo., assistant to the president of the National Old Trails Road association, met with Wayne county commissioners today. - . He asked the commissioners to sign
a contract to have the National road marked with the official signs of the Old Trails Road. The . signs are placed on substantial posts every mile and tell directions, routes to follow and distances to towns. It would cost $220 to have the markings placed through Wayne county. All three commissioners favored the plan and will probably let the contract

EACH SIDE IN RAIL STRIKE BELIEVES MEN WITH IT
(By Associated Press) - CHICAGO, March 17. Unless the unexpected intervenes, the greatest railroad strike in the history of the world will send St Patrick's day 1917, down in history with a significance hitherto unattached to the date. At 6 o'clock tonight the first steps designed, unless checked, to paralyze the commerce of the country are to be taken by the 400,000 members of the brotherhoods of the railway trainmen to attain, as the unions claim, the eight hour day on train service. According to the railroad managers, it is a fiat order to pay amounting in the aggregate to millions of dollars a burden which they claim is too great to be borne out . of present revenues. Gigantic Situation Developing The situation confronting the country is so big and so unusual that no one had been able to predict what it will mean and authorities do not know just haw the strike order will work out The railroads do not pretend to know how many will be working tomorrow nor what plan they will use. The brotherhoods do not know how many will obey the strike order.
Next week both sides will take account of the shock and settle to organize combats unless intervention by the president is successful today.
TWO MEN ESCAPE WHEN GLASS FALLS
Two men, Lewis King, manager of
a printing establishment, and Edward Ryan, a bank employe, had fortunate escapes from being killed or seriously injured about, noon today when two windows panes, blown out of the Westcott hotel by a very strong wind dropped upon them. One pane dropped upon King's head, breaking in many pieces but not even scratching him. The other pane fell upon Ryan's leg but ho also was not injured. They were walking on Main' street
Approximately 10,390 acres of denuded lands within the national forest

SINGER'S NOBILITY ATTRACTS PEOPLE TO CONCERT HERE
A woman approached the Galli-Curcl reserved seat chart in the Coliseum yesterday morning. "Is she really an Italian countess?" she inquired. Upon being assured that "she" is an Italian j noblewoman, the woman bought two tickets for the recital at the Coliseum, March 26. "My little girl wants to see a real noblewoman and I promised to take her," she explained. This caused, a discussion among the concert committeemen present as to Galli-Curci's rank. There was a dif
ference or opinion whether she is ai
countess or a marquise. It was settled by consulting a communication from her manager, Charles L. Wagner. This denominated her as the Marquise Galli-Curci. ' A marquis in continental nobility is
the wife of a marquis, or a holder of such title in her own name. A countess is one degree lower in the Almanac de Gotha. , The fact that the sensational soprano is of noble birth seems to be influencing a number of persons to purchase tickets. Saturday was another record-breaking day in the advance seat sale and Indications were that the Coliseum would be sold out by the middle of next week. Choice seats are being reserved rapidly and scores of mail orders from nearby towns are helping to deplete the chart.

COMMUNITY
Continued From Page One.l complement to it, and Riverdale could be saved to the community. Riverdale should be an asset and can be made an asset It is useless to - attempt to save Riverdale without a vision. Likewise it is f utile to have a vision without the means to make it effective. Richmond has the means to make the vision of its social thinkers effective. This community has a duty to perform by its inefficient units; itus a right to do civic missionary work in its own back yard. There has been agitation for a settlement bouse in Riverdale. It may have been unfortunate in its autttor.ity. But, agitation for 6uch a center has been met invariably with the specious plea that the churches are doing enough when they provide a mission end its workers. Teach People to Keep House. Do the bald facts support such a plea? Emphatically they do not. A settlement house, with trained workers, paid and volunteer, to teach the residents how to keep house, how to live, to instill self-respect and bring a sense of community responsibility to the unit la a necessity in Riverdale.
The Church Federation, by suggestion, commands immense means. The churches are composed of wealthy persons - If these persons can be led to see the benefits and the imperative need of such an investment action -will follow quickly. Incidentally, no finer monument could be erected to the memory of a public-spirited man, than a settlement bouse in Riverdale.
FLYING GLASS CUTS DAVID TEEPLE'S FACE
David Teeple, Main street shoe merchant, was painfully bruised and cut this morning when a small automobile driven by his cousin, . Merrill Teeple, Cambridge City, crashed, into a light post cross from the Bethard garage on Main street The driver received a badly bruised right leg. David Teeple was cut on the hands and face by parts of a broken windchield and his right knee cap was bruised. A stiff hat which he wore,
kept a heavy piece of flying glass from striking his face. The automobile which belongs to Bullerdick coal company, was starting on his day's run and was taking his cousin to his place of business on the way. The driver reached over to adjust the windshield and lost control of the automobile.

TOUR-FOLD BENEFIT From Two Grand Medicines In Spring. Yen know that physicians often give two prescriptions, perhaps more medicine to be taken together or attenatejy, or at different timeB. One reason may be that the medicines are "lncompotlble" -do not agree when closely mixed In taking or that desired results cannot be secured by one medicine alone. The most successful combination spring medicine treatment that we know of because perfectly "compatible" and productive of the best remits is in Hood's Sarasparllla and Peptiron Pills. . The former thoroughly searches out and expels impurities from the blood, while Peptiron Pills give" the powerful tonic they literally "put Iron Into your blood." Hood's Sarsaparilla should be taken before meals and Peptiron Pills after meals patients taking them so report the benefit is four-fold prompt, positive, permanent. Both these medl:taes are economical and pleasant to Afce. Adv. J
