GRANDMA USED SAGE TEA TO DARKEN HAIR

She Made Up a Mixture of Sage Tea and Sulphur to Bring Back Color, Gloss, Thickness.

Common garden sago brewed into a heavy tea with sulphur and alcohol added, wilW turn gray, streaked and faded hair beautifully dark and luxuriant, remove every bit of dandruff, fttOD scalp itching and falling hair. Jus! a few applications will prove a revelation if your hair is fading, gray or dry, scraggly and thin. Mixing the t Sage Tea and Sulphur recipe at home, though, is troublesome. An easier way Is to get the ready-to-use tonic, costing about 50 cents a large bottle at drug stores, known as "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," thus avoiding a lot of muss.' While wispy, gray, faded hair is not sinful, we aH desire to retain our youthful appearance and attractiveness. By darkening your hair with Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur, no one can tell, because it does it o naturally, so evenly. You Just dampen a Bponge or Boft brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time; by morning all gray hairs have disappeared, and, after another application or two. your hair becomes beautifully dark, glossy, soft and luxuriant. Adv.

"Really, you know," she said, "I do not think it very kind of you to come and be drunk here. It is hardly 'da rigueur for a first visit" Robert instinctively took off his cap. "I'm not tipsy really," he said, striving desperately to express himself. "I am awfully afraid I have come come to be ill." The girl looked at him again. "Father," she said, "who is this man?" But her father had reached that stage which precludes sensibility of a useful order. "A publican, I feel convinced, my dear." he chuckled, "and In all probability a sinner since he bears the hall-marks of his majesty's hospitality a well-shaved head." Robert caught the words, but the walls of the room seemed to be reeling round him. They came closer,

then at last a great darkness seemed to slide down and cover him altogether. CHAPTER X Robert Finds Bohemia Colonel James smoked his cheap cigarette thoughtfully, his feet in their threadbare slippers poised comfort

ably on the mantelpiece. On the table there still lay the remains of a scanty breakfast. The colonel hated to see these too evident signs of a somewhat povertystricken meal; he was the type of man who invariably liked the disagreeables of life to be hidden from view and never discussed. It was precisely this unfortunate characteristic which had led to his surreptitious drinking and consequent downfall. He wished Cecilia would come in and clear, the breakfast things away. It distinctly annoyed him to be forced to contemplate the meager breakfast, which was all they could afford, owing to his pleasing little habit of spending in the public-house the small weekly sum allowed him by his people. "Cecil!" he called. He possessed the acceptedly cultured voice of the public-school man, and though his linen was somewhat frayed end his suit more obviously well worn than Is usual among service men. he had indubitably the air of a well-bred man. "We belong to the finest old family in Devonshire, my dear," he said occasionally to Cecilia. She would look at him with an air of mingled pity and scorn. "We are, perhaps, hardly show ex

hibits," she would reply, and the conversation would languish. Cecilia could dimly remember the life in India, with a frail, pretty mother who cried rather often, and a rather too gay young father who was often not home till the morning and then slept all day. Then came the voyage home and various long visits in country houses, where all the other little girls had nurses, and where there were often what mother called "scenes" with father. The days of country houses passed away, and then came London for a year in a little house in Clarendon Road. Mother had died there, and afterward father and she had taken "apartments," this time nearer Shepherd's Bush; and then when Cecilia was nine they had moved Into two rooms in Woodstock Road. Hence Cecilia had grown up in a certain routine, which included fishsupper at least on Monday if she could manage to secure the money. The landlady, Mrs. Smith, who was an obliging old person, waited cheerfully for- the rent if by chance, the colonel, in a moment of abstraction, drank that awa3r, too. ' She was secretly proud of her aristocratic lodgers, and always remarked in answer to any supercilious comment, "That if the colonel did drink a bit free, 'e did it like the gentleman 'e was." Cecilia at eighteen was a typical product of her upbringing. She was shrewd and careless, refined and extremely Bohemian. She cheerfully accepted a sausage in Mrs. Smith's kitchen when ber food was low, and invariably insisted on having her morninrr tub and reading German novels which she obtained as a loan from a second-hand little bookshop in Silver Street.

She was artistic, and painted in a O wealth of color which was as amazing as it was beautiful. Her dress was i 0

generally rather more a product of art than of conventional good taste.
