. "Disappeared?" Lady , Torrens repeated." Then she flushed angrily. "My good woman," she said, "in Our family we do not 'disappear! If you wish to tell' me that my nephew has left your house, why cannot you say so in an ordinary, reasonable way?" '; , . ; "Will you please sit down, Lady Torrens, and let me tell you quite quietly all that has happened?" "I Insist upon knowing," Lady Torrens answered; "and it I find that any unpleasantness has caused my nephew to suddenly leave your bouse, and if he has thereby retarded his recovery, I tell you frankly that I shall consider you have been guilty of gross negligence! . Now, get on with your story!" she ordered. The sister waited patiently for Lady Torrens to adjust her lorgnette and draw her handkerchief from the capacious pocket in her silken underskirt before beginning. , "It is hardly fair to Judge the matter before yon really understand it. Lady Torrens;" she said. "I will be brief, and tell you as quickly as I can what has happened. "Captain Fane was operated upon on Monday. As you probably know, the effect of the anesthetic lasts several hours, consequently neither the surgeon nor myself was surprised at his condition for the first day.. I may say that on the second day I noticed nothing unusual; but on Thursday', when I went up to visit hira In the morning, I was struck by the vagueness of his speech. He seemed to have no remembrance of his operation, or even of his marriage. "I was puzzled, worried; but I was not really distressed. I thought perhaps the great loss of blood from the bead had temporarily disturbed the power of coherent thought. In the afternoon I went up to see him again: he had forgotten who I was. Then I became really frightened.. I rang up the surgeon, Sir Maline Gorde, and told him, and he came round that evening. "While he and I were with Captain Fane, Mrs. Fane came in. The moment before Sir Maline had been asking Captain Fane if he did not re

member his marriage. He denied absolutely that such an event had taken place. Then, when his eyes fell upon his wife, when she went to him and took his hands, be suddenly . said, 'Rachel, my wife!' I thought his memory had returned. I was overjoyed; and then, an instant later, he asked her if she could tell him . If be had ever seen her before. It was as though a veil were lifted for an instant and then dropped again." "Go on go on!" said Lady Torrens feverishly. "Tell me what has happened to him!" "Yesterday morning I sat with him and talked on various subjects. His mind is quite rational, you understand; it simply cannot hold the past, that is all. The surgeon called about twelve and seemed to think Captain Fane was progressing as favorably as one could expect In the afternoon I visited my people at Pinner, leaving, of course, a nurse in charge. ; When I returned at eight o'clock : yesterday evening it was to find that Captain Fane had disappeared! "Two Inspectors from Scotland Yard had come at once on receipt of a message from Sir. Maline Gorde, who had been rung up by Captain Fane's nurse. It appears Sir Maline called about five-thirty, when the nurses were at tea. He went up alone to Captain Fane, and was with him for, perhaps, ten minutes. Before leaving he saw the nurse, and gave her some instructions, and told her Captain Fane was sleeping. She went up to his room about half an hour later to find his bed empty and his clothes missing. It was then about six-thirty. "From that hour to this no news has been heard of Captain Fane, and yet he is a man most people would notice; and at the moment he possesses a most obvious means of identification, for his head is shaven. Sir Maline has given .the Scotland Yard people "carte blanche"; but so far they have not even the slightest clue." Lady Torrens snorted. : . . "You mean to tell me that in this country, in a place like London, possessing the finest police force in the world, it's possible for a man without a memory, a man with a shaven head,

to be absolutely lost in two days to disappear entirely from the world?" The sister put her hand Impulsively on Lady Torren's. "He will be found; I know he will!' the said pitifully. "Found ?" Lady Torrens said. "Of course he will! It's it's preposterously stupid of us both to be so afraid, my dear!" . She energetically dried her eyes, but the handkerchief seemed of little avail. "You are 'sure there is hope?" a shaking voice asked uncertainly. . She lied, for she was feeling almost hopeless; but she meant to cheer Lady Torrens if it were possible. Therefore she made no mention of the fears of Inspector James of Scotland Yard or dwelt upon the tragic fact of the lost man's weakness and lack of memory. Through the years the knowledge had come to "her that it was always time enough to be sad when things had reached their worst altogether. To be continued
