Starr Erects Large Building To Manufacture Phonographs

To meet the increased demands for its phonographs, Starr Piano company added the largest factory building in Richmond to its plant in the Whitewater river valley last year. The new structure Is six stories , tall, fifty-five feet wide and two hundred and twenty-five feet long. It is constructed entirely of fireproof materials and with the idea of protecting the health of scores of workmen who are employed in the new building. , William Hendricks did the general contracting work on the building and the Richmond Electric company furnished all electrical equipment. Constructed of Concrete. The building is mostly made of brick and concrete carefully laid on solid steel frame work. Hundreds of windows permit the light in daytime to flood the various floors and carefully placed electric lights protect the eyes of workmen at night. There is only one- large room on each story of the building, excepting a few testing laboratories and drying oven rooms. The main factory rooms- are- finished in dull white. In keeping with the "safety first" signs posted conspicuously in the

building and on; the ' factory grounds, all machinery, is modern and provided with the latest safety devices.' , . 7 Devoted to Phonographs. The entire building is devoted to the construction of phonographs and the molding of phonograph records ready for the market. The first floor of the building is used as a store room and various wood parts which go into the phonograph cabinets are roughly shaped here. '. ' The second floor is devoted mostly to making finished phonograph records. The special composition out of which the commercial record is made is mixed here. The master records are brought from another building and placed in compact steam presses. This master record is made through a complicated process from . the . original record, taken from the recording phonograph. A proper amount of the tar like mixture is placed in the press and the steam, turned on. - A pressure of about two thousand pounds is exerted. When the plunger of the press is raised, a new' Starr phonograph record i3 practically ready for the market. Of course, a few finishing touches are necessary. Assemble Spring Motors. On the third floor, spring motors used in the phonographs are made

and assembled. The whole motor is made at the factory. Each motor Is carefully tested to assure a steady speed which is one of the first essentials to a good phonograph. The next floor is devoted to the assemblyi ng of cases. The wooden parts are fitted together and fastened. Glue is used extensively in this work, .After the cases have been assembled, they are placed in large clamps which fit over them and hold the various parts in their right places until the glue has had a time to set. The case is sanded and the first stain applied. - Assembled on Fifth Floor. The horns and motors are installed in the cases on the fifth floor,. Spruce horns- are used exclusively in Starr, phonographs. The wood is of the same variety used in sounding boards of high-class pianos. It vibrates in such a way as to guarantee a true" tone One corner of this roonv is devoted to a testing room.. . Every phonograph must be tested by experts before it is sent to the shipping department. The machines are tested as to workmanship on cases, speed of. motor, quality of tone, and general appearance. The upper floor of the new building is used for staining and varnishing of cases.
