She was appointed by the president, Paul Oler, at the services last Sunday evening which were led by Sam Byrd. Devotions were conducted by Edith Strickler and Lonel Oler. About forty-five, persons attended the worship.

fever. Captain Fane. . To be perfectly frank with you, I am of the opinion that this fever you suffer from is not In the least climatic. I examined your head thoroughly this afternoon, as you know. I dare say you wondered why. I will tell you." He hesitated, then resumed: "I was amazed when I first visited you at the abnormal flow, of blood there seemed to be to the head. After a minute examination I am satisfied that there is some very slight pressure on the brain." "Do you mean I ought to have an operation?" Robert asked In a bewildered way. "A very insignificant one," the specialist answered. Rachel strained to catch the words. She heard bim say: "Have you at any time had a bad accident fallen on your, head been wounded there or anything of that sort?" "I took a toss at polo " Robert answered. "It gave me concussion, I remember, for a bit. But you don't mean to say that a fall like that could cause all these goes of fever?" "I think so."

"I've always been such a strong chap," Robert said rather pathetically. "My dear fellow, ' so you are and

alwavs will be: but therein and that

Is why I want you to have this little operation lies your danger. In your present state of health any sudden excitement might cause you the greatest injury. Of course, you must have another opinion I should wish that if you decide to have the displacement of the bone rectified." Rachei, kneeling by the door, bit her lips until the blood came. An operation performed by Maline on Robert! It was unthinkable! "You'd put it through for me, Sir Maline?" Robert said. "If you wish me to conduct the operation, I will do so of course; but you must have another opinion, Captain Fane.'' Why should he say that if he meant to harm Robert? Of course he would not for his own sake for the sake of his reputation he could not do such

Oh, why was she so beset with terror? Why could she not forget his words ol that hateful afternoon? Why had she lied to Robert? If she had told him the truth, all this would never have happened. She paid in that little space of time a thousandfold for her weakness and falsehood. She could hear nothing more. There was silence In the room. Had Maline gone? No, she heard his step; he was go

ing out of the room. But why did he rot say "Good-by" to Robert? She waited until she heard the front door close, then she went in to Robert. He lay on his side asleep, with his hand on the counterpane. Surely, he could not really be asleep? ! He had been speaking five minutes ago. She bent and kissed the brown hand that lay so still. - "Robert, darling!" she whispered. After all, this was their wedding night he could sleep afterward. She had only a few minutes before she must leave for the theatre. She kiss

ed his mouth beneath the fair mus

tache. "Robert!" she said. v Still he did not stir. "Robert!" she cried again. An agony of fear was in her voice. She shook his hand and kissed him passiontely. He lay still. She cried out and Dosser entered hurridly. He's sleeping, and he will not wake. For Heaven's sake, wake him!" she cried desperately. Dosser shook his head gently, and then more vehemently. "Ring up a doctor," Rachel said. "Only hurryj hurry! Ring up Dr. Matlet in Berkeley Street!" But when the doctor came he could do nothing. He was a very , clever

man, and Rachel felt as she looked in

to his honest eyes a sense of trust. "It's some pressure on the brain," he said gravely. "Probably he will not wake for some hours." He listened In silence to Dosser's account of Sir Maline's diagnosis. "Precisely precisely," he agreed. To be continued -..

Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin a Safe and Efficient Family Remedy. . Every member of the family is more or less subject to constipation and every home should always be supplied with a dependable remedy to promptly relieve this condition. Whenever the bowels become clogged and the natural process of elimination thereby disturbed, the entire system is effected, and readily subject to attack by disease. Constipation is a condition that should never be neglected. Mrs. E. R. Gilbert, of Millbro, Va., says that Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is a splendid laxative for children because they like its pleasant taste, and it acts so easily and naturally, without griping or strain, and she finds it equally effective for the rest of the family. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is a combination of simple laxative herbs with pepsin that contains no opiate or narcotic drug. It is mild and gentle in its action, and does not cause pain or discomfort. Druggists everywhere sell this excellent remedy for fifty cents a bottle.

To avoid imitations and ineffective substitutes be sure you get Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. See that a facsimile of Dr. Caldwell's signature and his portrait appear on the yellow carton in which the bottle is packed. A trial bottle, free of charge, can be obtained by writing to Dr. W. B. Caldwell, 455 Washington St., Monticello, Illinois.
