FOULKE DESCBEOES BATOiNG i LETTER FROM HAWAII
' Above If a picture of the American liner Orlean and her commander, Captain Tucker, taken just before the veesel called for Europe to run the cordon of German submarines. It will bj noted that the Orlean is net marked in the manner specified by the German government, and the outcome of her trip is anxiously awaited by official Washington and the world at large. great deal more than lie is going up and there we ran in close to the leach, when the steersman with a dexterous turn headed us out again ail splashed and soaked with the water. Then he baled cut the canoe and at it we-went again and again for an hour or more amid much laughter and screams of surprise and delight. It was certainly great fun. Bathers Use Surf Board The Hawaiians here (and indeed other bathers as well) 'also use a surf board, about 10 feet long and two and a half feet wide, lying on it and paddling with both hands, then kneeling on it and even standing upright and thus riding the surf. I tried it but could not balance myself and continually tumbled off. It requires prac-tics .md experience. One thing that seemed to me remarkable here in the tropics was the absence of danger from Sharks. In Cuba ycu cannot safely swim in the ocean, but here the coral reefs protect the bathers. The sharks are numerous enough outside, but they cannot penetrate the shallows formed by the reefs. Blessed indeed are there islands where there are no snakes nor other deadly reptiles nor insects, nor malaria and where even the volcanoes and the sharks are harmless! Speak Kindred Languages. One thing is hard to understand the Hawaiians, the Maoris of New Zealand, the Samoans and other island natives speak kindred languages. They are of one origin. Now how did such

It b a very long and very narrow dugut. Eight or nine persons can sit in t if they are thin enough but a very fat man could not get in at all. Now mch a canoe, made as it is of a big jee and round at the bottom would ;ip over quickly in the sea. To prerent this,' there 13 an outrigger on ne side, a long pole ten or tweive eet from the canoe to which it is 'astfned by two other poles. The Jawaiians are very ekillfill in managing their canoes in the surf.

"Some Australian friends and I fct two of them to take us out First, Ave had to put on our bathing suits. Then the thinnest lady in the party was told to take the seat at the front, the heavier weights were in the middie and the lighter ones again behind One of our two Hawaiian guides steered with a big paddle and other paddles were given to each of us. Went Some Distance Away "We went out some way from the shore and then waited for a big wave, a "thriller," as he called it. When he saw it' coming he headed the canoe toward the teach and cried out to us to paddle for all that was out. We did our best, the wave overtook u3 and carried us on its crest. Then we stopped paddling and let the wave do the rest. "The front of the canoe, was low down and the stern up high in the midst of the breaker and we whizzed through the water like an arrow, feeling all the time as if we were sliding down hill. This is the way a man feels who is tossed In a blanket. "lie seems to be coming down a

savages traverse thousands of miles of ocean to get from one group of islands to another, on frail vessels like theirs without a compass? Did they fasten many canoes together and make a raft? How did they carry their supplies and weather the storms and transport their families? Were there other islands that have disappeared which formed links between , these distant groups? Did the natives formerly pass a higher civilization than when the Europeans first discovered them and did they have same knowledge of navigation? Conjecture runs wild through all these possibilities.
