MODERN BUILDING METHODS EMPLOYED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW CHURCH
Allen Jay Memorial Friends' church, West Main and Seventh streets, represents all that is modern in church construction work. It maintains the idea of Quaker simplicity, however. This church is another one of the many monuments erected to Richmond labor and Richmond products last year. The "Buy In Richmond" idea was constantly kept in mind by the committee in charge. Harry Pinnick, a local contractor, did the general contract work of the church. The' thoroughness with which details were cared for and the quality of materials used throughout, guarantees West Richmond a neat and substantial church structure for an indefinite future. The fireproof idea was carried out in a general way. Johanning Does Plumbing. Charles Johanning Plumbing company did the plumbing work and furnished the heating system. The basement is equipped with modern rest room and kitchen plumbing. The heating system is of the vapor type which makes "knocking" in radiators impossible and insures a steady heat. Provision was made in installing the heating system for the building to be kept comfortably warm even though enough windows are kept open during cold weather to insure good ventilation. Louck and Hill, a local firm
which specializes in church and office furniture, held the contract for fixtures. The concrete floor of the church is covered with sound deadening cork carpet. The seats are of a mahogany finish to match the wood work and are constructed with the idea of guaranteeing comfort to the audiences. Wiring Done by Wood. Harry U. Wood did the electric wiring for the new building and the Richmond Electric company installed and furnished electric fixtures. The fixtures in the main auditorium are of the semi-indirect lighting type. Frank E. Weaver did the brick work. The rear wall was constructed so that it could be easily torn out when the congregation decides to add a Sunday school room. At the same time, this wall has a finished appearance and is absolutely substantial. Newman Stone company, also a local concern, furnished the stone which went into the construction work including two large pillars at the front of the church. ' Haner and Fahlsing held the painting contract. The finish this company left on the inside woodwork adds much to the attractiveness of the structure. Joseph C. Mullen did the plastering work. The work throughout is of the sand finish variety. Allen Jay. Memorial Friends'
church is the first of a series of new buildings which Friends' will add to the development of Richmond within the next ten years. Undoubtedly one or two new buildings will be added to Earlham college and since all the important offices of the Five Years' Meeting are located in this city, it can safely be assumed that the erection of a general administration building here is not far distant.
Builders Anticipate Big Year of Work Richmond builders and men connected with allied industries are looking forward to a period of unusual activity this year. Architects and real estate dealers report brisk buisness for this season. j A number of vacant lots in suburban districts hiive been sold and architects have buen called upon to prepare plans for modern homes which will demand the services of contractors, carpenters, plasterers, painters, plumbers and electricians. With the gradual increase in population of the city due to the impetus of an industrial awakening, demand for more new houses, especially rental properties, is expected to increase greatly when spring opens. .
