To think he was to marry ber to-
cay: ' He stared out on the shifting life on the pareme&ts below. He remembered bis meeting with Rachel one evening at the Royal Hotel. He bad told himself then that she was not an ordinary girl. After a few more meetings be bad suddenly realized that not only was she not ordinary, but that she was .sufficiently extraordinary to have become the one woman in the world to" htm. He bad never known any women ery welL His mother had died when be was quite a little chap. He bad bad a succession of boarding schools, then Sandhurst, and then the army, and plenty of hard work. But he loved now, as be did moat things, with all bis strength. He had wished to marry his beloved at once, but Rachel had refused. Perhaps she was not sure of herself. Perhaps in ber stage lite she. had seen too many cudden infatuations, too .many marriages celebrated at once and repented ever afterward But she was to marry him at last; she loved him enough now. He threw up the window. ' Outside, the dusty street seemed to be lightly veiled by an almost Invisible, gold ipaagled mist The trees, just visible In the park, were- starred with tiny emerald points. At the corner a flowerwoman guarded an immense basket trammed with violets, jonquils, deeply bolden daffodils, and flaming, exotic carnations. - "It's topping absolutely the whole thing!" Robert said, bis face flowing:, his eyes shining. A car passed below; in it a man in a big fur coat was seated. He was leading in a small note-book. , Suddenly be looked up. His eyes caught and held Robert's. It was Sir Maline Gorde. Long after the car had vanished In the swirl of traffic Robert stared into the street. At last he turned away.
Hi3 pulsing joy in the day seemed I
somehow dimmed. He felt oddly tired nd suddenly depressed. ' In Rachel's drawing-room the depression vanithed. It was a long, low room, with a beautifully carved ceiling and high overmantel. .The walls were hung with toft gray, linen, and the carpet was a Persian praying-rug of which the design was worked in rich violet and trarlet. Early as the year was, there were
pots of white lilac and mimosa about the room, and on .ae- piano there stood a vase filled with glowing, almost vermilion carnations. Rachel came in quickly, he was dressed la a wonderful grean-aad-blue frock, with a high sliver sash, and she wore a big black hat, with widely stretching white wings. Robert took ber in his anas and kissed ber lips. "My wife!" was all be said- , Hand la hand they drove to tie registry office. To them tbe little bare room, with iti rows of dusty books and its dirty windows, seemed a paradise. Tbe white-faced, depressing-looking
registrar, with Ma dreadful Cockney
accent, was to them tbe matt who held

"Sure, anfl she's married" he began to read he .signature aloud ' ' 'Robert Torrens Fane, captain la -big majesty's Ninth Regiment of the Blue

Mother Praises Remedy That Relieved Her Baby
Five different ovens meet about all the possible requirements of a new gas range.
Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin Is a Dependable Family Laxative. Nearly all the sickness incident to a baby's life is due to constipation, or inaction of the bowels. At the first indication of irregularity in this important function, relief should be afforded promptly. A mild laxative should be administered to gently carry off the congested waste and leave the stomach and bowels free to perform their alloted tarks. Of the various remedies recommended to relieve constipation, the combination of simple laxative herbs with pepsin, as prescribed by Dr. W. B. Caldwell and sold In drug stores under the name of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, is tbe most effective. It contains no opiate or narcotic drug, is pleasant to the taste, mild and gentle in action, and quickly brings the desired relief in an easy, natural manner. . Mrs. C. J. Douglas, Mason, 111., writes that she cannot say enough in praise of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin as a dependable family laxative. Little Mary Eva had been badly constipated until they tried Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, which brought the first natural relief the child bad had in two weeks.
