"The Forgotten Wedding" MTSftS By OLIVE WADSLEY SB MS- WSJSS:
Rachel Ford, In her last despairing cry for pity and credulity, sounded the gamut of emotion. Her wonderful voice, caressing, passionate, imploring seemed to beat against the silence of her husband's refusal. The audience clapped wMdly. From the gallery there came the shouts acclaiming triumph. 'Rachel! Rachel!" The house took
Smiling a little tremulously, she came before the curtain and bowed repeatedly. She was tall, and her head was exquisitely poised on her slendeT throat. She was not only beautiful, in the conventional sense of the term, but she possessed a distinctive charm which placed her above other women. Her hair was very dark, and her eyes, cet far apart, shone between her black eyelashes with an almost topaz light. Exhausted, fatigued, overwhelmed by the emotional strain of her role, with a little graceful gesture of her hand, she disappeared. Lady Torrens, her face still wet with tears that Rachel had inspired, turned to Sir Maline and spoke to him. He did not answer. He was staring with a fanatic look In his eyes at the stage. His hands the almost visibly skilful hands of the surgeon were clenched on his knee
until the knuckles showed like lumps of Ivory beneath the thin skin. . He looked like a man poesecsed, obsessed by one great idea or passion. There was something fierce, compelling, primitive in his gaze. "I have seen that look on a man's face before but where? where?" Lady Torrens asked herself. She sent her thoughts for an instant voyaging, but they, brought back merely a chaotic vision of overpowering heat, and a dusky, half lighted temple. She looked again at Gorde. His eyes met hers tranquilly. Had she dreamed the Image of that passionracked face that had so impressed her? He leaned toward her slightly, his bands loosely clasped between his "Lady Torrens," he said, "are you a devotee of the great unexpected?" "Am I not a woman?" she replied. "Then will you come on, now to a supper that I am giving in honor of Miss Ford?" "But 1 shall be charmed." Gorde's eyes narrowed a little. "If you are with a party," he said carelessly, "pray bring them,' too." "My party is only one nephew that tall, British army looking person talking to Carthew."
"Do ask him to come, too, Lady Torrens." She beckoned with her fan to the "British army person." He came at once. She introduced the two men. "Captain Fane Sir Maline Gorde." "Sir Maline is a man who invents brains, Robert," she went on; "and sometimes exploits his own. He has just had a brilliant inspiration he wants us both to go on to a supper he is giving in honor of Miss Ford." "I shall be delighted," Fane said cordially. "Perhaps you already know Miss Ford?" Sir Maline asked. "1 traveled back from the cape with her a month ago." "Really?" Gorde said, rising. "Then it will be a thoroughly friendly little gathering. "I must bid you a brief farewell," le added, bowing over Lady Torren's hand. "I shall expect you at my house in half an hour." With his noiseless tread he departed toward the stage door. "Handsome man," Fane said; in a queer sort of way." "I have never been an admirer of the exotic," his aunt replied dryly. Fane pulled his mustache.
