Loyalty of the Aliens. The expression of the German-American residents of this city and of the editors of the big German dailies shows that in the crucial test of their loyalty they have proved their past promises by their acts, for almost with unanimous acclaim they say they will be loyal to their adopted country. Their sympathies may have gone out to Germany in its conflict with the Allies, but now since their own country has Drolcen with the Kaiser, they will be loyal to the United States. A harder test of their patriotism could not have been given them. The stand they have taken proves that America is a melt- . ing-pot in which the races of Europe are melted

into a new people, dedicated to the principles of liberty, and consecrated to a republican form of government. v

The prosperity of a city is to be found not only in the number of factories it contains, but also in the jobbers who make their headquarters within its confines. The splendid showing should cheer the man who now and then becomes dissatisfied with his city and believes that it is not forging to the front fast enough.

NEW YORK TAKES WALLOP AT HIGH COST OF LIVING

Richmond as a Jobbing Center. Fifty jobbing firms in this city last year did a business of $570,000. Few of us had knowledge of the magnitude of the wholesale business handled by the locl firms. Three lines of trade alone had a volume of trade that exceeded $1,000,000. They were groceries, hardware and dry goods. Citizens might ponder with profit the volume of business in the various lines : Hardware $1,500,000. Dry Goods $1,000,000.

Shop at Home. A number of merchants are carrying fullpage advertisements to apprize the citizens of Richmond of the advantage of shopping .at home. Their effort is worthy of commendation and shoppers should heed the appeal. A city prospers by the co-o)erative effort of all of its citizens. Every dollar spent in Richmond contributes one dollar to the welfare of the whole city. Every dollar left in Cincinnati or Indianapolis is a dollar withdrawn from circulation here and added to the prosperity of these cities. ,

Dogs of various brecd3 have proven invaluable in the trench warfare which has developed in the present great conflict. They are trained not to bark or to whine, and arc used for a great many purposes in the trenches. In order to protect them against gas attacks gas masks have been devised, which soldiers fasten on the anlmals as soon as a warning of a gas attack Is sounded. This picture shows one of the dogs used by the French army in the west wearing his gas mask.

'WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF RHEUMATISM, LUMBAGO AND GOUT? (By Valentine Mott Pierce, M. D.) Ever since Scheele, in 1775, discovered that uric acid was present In the system, scientific men have been making experimental investigations and it Is the almost universal opinion of our best medical men that the presence of uric acid in the system in excess is the cause of rheumatism and gout. When the urate salt3 are preeltated out of the blood Into the solid I issue-structure the person suffers from gout or rheumatism in the muscles and joints or suffer from lumbago and pain in the back muscles. The first aim of the sufferer should be to get rid of the uric acid, which, In excess, is a poison, and to do this it is well to drink a pint of hot water morning-and night get tablets of Anuric at the nearest drug store ?nd take then, before meals regularly. Anuric will do no harm to the system and will carry off the uric acid by stimulating the kidneys. Then tincture iodine may be painted over the swellings, or in more severe cases hot linteed poultices may be applied to soothe the local symptoms. But most important is it for the sufferer to abstain from red meat, to diet, drink only lemonade or hot water, and take Anuric for a considerable time as it causes a drainage outward of the uric acid and is many times more pitent than lithia and usually one finds that it dissolves uric acid a3 hot water does sugar. Doctors Say Colds Must Be Prevented

Infections of the nose, ear and throat often requiring costly and dangerous operations under the knife, may result from ordinary "cold in the head." These can in most cases be prevented by use of Zonite diluted in water and used as a spray, although, if through neglect the ear has became infected, consult an ear specialist at once. The American Medical Association at its Detroit convention seriously considered dangers of neglecting simple precautions. Doctor Hill Hastings of Los Angeles declared ninety out of every hundred cases of mastoiditis (a disease most frequently fatal) result from ordinary colds and sore throats. Other grave maladies are caused in ihe same way. The nostrils should bo kept cleah by the use of Zonite, thus preventing Infection by germ-laden air. " Zonite while non-poisonous and perfectly harmless, Is the Ideal germ destroyer, antiseptic, disinfectant and deodorant. At all drug 6tores, Home slzo 25 end 50c; Doctors' and Hospital size, $1.60.
