GARBED AS GHOSTS GERMANS ATTACKED; WERE HURLED BACK

(Correspondence of Associated Press.) WITH THE BRITISH IN FRANCE, Via London, Feb. 5. The German raiders who made two attacks Friday morning against the British trenches south of the Ypres salient looked for all the world like the famous Ku-Klux Klan, the crusaders of reconstruction days in the southern state of America. They were clad in white Bhcets fashioned Into a sort of smock, wore white hoods and masks and sought thus to cross the snow covering No Man's land without detection. - , Come Over In Waves The raiders came over in two waves only to be hurled back with heavy losses in killed and wounded. They swept into a perfect storm of machine gun fire and there were crimson splashes in the enow wherever one ff the strange white figures fell. There was a ghostly aspect to this affair throughout. It was attempted at the misty hour when the late winter moonlight fades into th dawn. After an all night vigil in the front line trenches the soldiers' nerves nrj apt to be Jumpy as morning approaches. On this occasion there had been the usual preliminary German bombardment and something was expected but not the ghostly apparitions which eventually greeted the gaze of the sentries as they peered in the chilly half light into th barren stretch of white separating their trenches from those of the enemy. Reagrdless of whether they were ghosts or Germans the sentries knew that the proper thing to do was to shoot and there came a crackle of Jifles all aloig the line. One young Irish officer stood up and let go with his revolver. Thn the machine guns chimed in nnd the first wave of the Attacker war. breaking when the second came over. Two Germans niani?p'l to plunge into a British trench l'i't the- go out so quickly that thoy l-'H behind them unused a can of dynamite, mcny grenades and a rifle.

A strenuous battle to prevent a debate upon the President's peace message is expected when the resultion of Senator Cummins calling for an open discussion is called upon the calendar and cannot be taken up except by vote. Almost any motion, however, will suffice for Senator Cummins to base a ipeech upon, so that a debate is practically certain. Senator Borah, who has a resolution pending to re-affirm the Monroe doctrine, and which is looked upon as a Elap at President Wilson's peace message, has said that he will not allow his resolution to in:ereferc with that of Senator Cummins, and that he will stand out of the way.
