Richmond was yanked out of the lead of the state race here last night, when Muncie. continuing Us vigorous work inaugurated a few days ago, sent the Quakers down end out over the 3 to 2 route. Muncle's vietory was a timely one and served to make the upper tier of the state league a bit more crowded. From the start, Muncie had an edge on the Quakers. The Richmond players showed signs of physical strain and did not display their characteristic scrap. Muncie with two nights" rest behind, was in better physical trim. Superior endurance, the result, Eounted. Muncie scored two goals in the opening period and held the lead throughout. Richmond managed to take an early lead thanks to Sox Qulgley's score three minutes after start of play. Muncie's come-back in the shapa of Williams' two goals, however, counteracted Sox's goal. - Richmond, 43; Rushville, 18 ' As per forecast, -Richmond high school's chance on the state rag had little or no trouble In disposing of thaRed and Black opposition from Ruchville. The game at the Coliseum last night was played as a part of the R.. II. S.-Earlham combined' offering. Last night's showing of the Richmond five was a disappointment in more ways than one. R. H. S. stacked against a weaker opponent used tactics that fell far from being sportsmanlike. Instead of playing basketball the Richmond team, and Rushville, too, for that matter, resulted to maneuvers that might get by in a prize ring but never on a basketball court. . A goodly part of the blame for the exhibition in the' art of pugilism should be accredited the. referee, Chester Stayton. . Richmond, as well as Rushville. knew that Stayton would overlook the rough stuff and both teams worked accordingly. An tn the eame itself. Richmond led from the time O'Neal tossed the first basket. Rushville was, however, a game loser and came back for punishment until the last gun. Jessup and Thorpe were the high point getters. The score: Richmond G. F. M. P. The 8. R. O. sign was utilized at the Coliseum last night. Richmond high school's rather disappointing performance was offset by the unexpected speed shown by the Quakers. Talbert Jessup, forward, led the R. H. -S. drive. -iTal showed a tendency to attempt manslaughter, however. - Bus Parker, more or less Indisposed, ,tl5e. result. of a bad cold, played a rat"tl'ng good game nevertheless. Cy Pitts", the former R. H. S. guard, was a big help in the Quaker victory. The high school crowd was back of the old timer. . Coach Lyboult used nine men against the Rushville pack. EARLHAM PUTS FOfrTH c CLASS THAT WINS OUT Earlham, 35; Normal, 19. ; Earlham college basketball team, in its first I. C. A. L. contest of the year, State Normal, at the Coliseum last night displayed a brand of work that promises the Quakers more or less publicity before the close of the campaign this spring. The Quakers were better than they hare been for several years. '' .-"-'-. Away to a good start. Coach Whiteside's charges by superior team work and more accurate goal shooting managed to hold a comfortable lead throughout the game. But once or twice did the teachers threaten to get obnoxious and then the clever defen sive work of Cy Pitts and Cap. Temple responded. Shows Balanced Work. That Earlham worked in harmony is evidenced by the relative scoring strength of the team's offensives. Forwards Pontius and Smith scored five field goals apiece. Center Cutrell rung up four. Pretty evenly balanced offensive work this. Furthermore each of the three forwards had about the same number of shots at the goal. In contrast to the work of Chester Stayton, who allowed the high school game to develop into a farce, Eddie Cook, official in the college contest kept the men on t"he rmrall the time but tolerated none of the low brow stuff. Cook was instrumental in making this game the speediest that has been played on the Coliseum floor in seme time. Earlham developed lio individual stars.
