DANIELS TO RECITE NEED FOR YARDS TO BUILD SHIPS
WASHINGTON. Jan. 12. Secretary Daniels will carry his fight for equipment of additional navy yards for construction of battle cruisers to congress when he appears before the House naval commitee next Monday to explain the situation that has prevented the department from getting contracts awarded for the. four big ships authorized last year. ' He has asked for an additional $12,000,000 to be immediately available for yard equipment, and It Is (Inderstood the department plans to build two. ships each at the best available building yards probably Philadelphia and Norfolk where the four ships would be laid down. The secretary will be followed bf representatives of the various ship building companies with which the department has been able to reach an agreement either as to the coat of the vessels If privately built or the time to be occupied in their construction. SUICIDE SUSPECTED
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 Corporal John A. Stewart, Company C,. ninth Infantry, whose' body was found on the Mexican side of the river near Laredo two days ago, is believed by American army officers on the border to - have . committed ' suicide. His throat was cut. In bis pockets was $10, according to a report to the war department from the commanding officer at Laredo. Efforts to get possession of the body are being made. WASHINGTON,' Jan. 12. Funeral services for Dr. Hamilton Wright, who won International repute chiefly through his efforts as representative of the United States to solve the opium problem, were held here today. He had been in ill health since 1915, when he was seriously injured in ah automobile accident in France while engaged in relief work there. He died of pneumonia at his home here Tuesday.

ONE DEGREE BELOW ZERO IS RECORDED
Visions of an open winter received an unceremonious 'setback late yesterday when the thermometer began to show a decided inclination to fall. The drop inaugurated early yesterday coutinued till early this' morning when the government thermometer at the pumping station reached the minimum of one degree below zero. Indications are that this mark will.be passed tonight and tomorrow morning.
WIDOW MAKES APPEAL
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12. The widow of Luis D' An tin, the American Employe of the Mexican embassy here, who died suddenly in Mexico while on his way to Queretaro with Ambas dor designate Arredondo will make a personal plea to Secretary Lansing to institute a careful inquiry in to the circumstances surrounding bis death. The American official report from Mexico City supported the official Mexican report that death resulted from natural causes.

RAISES LARGEST LOAN
VIENNA, Jan. 12. Incomplete returns from the fifth Austrian war loan show 4,412,800,000 crowns subscribed with approximately 300,000,000 already subscribed hut still outstanding. The loan is thus the largest yet raised in Austria.

ST. JOHN, N. N. B.; Jan: 12. The purchase by the Canadian government of the International Railroad of New Brunswick, which extends from Cambellton, near the Quebec-line, to St
Leonards, on the main border, was reported today by the St John Standard, an organ of the Dominion govern, ment, party. The price, it was stated, was between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000. The line which is about 120 miles long has been operated by the government under a lease.
