4 Home-Made Fireless Cooker

By Juliette Davis. THE woman who has cast lomrina; eyes on the expensive fireless cooker in the shops nay take heart, for a story comes Irom Italy of a clever Italian reman who has discovered a perSectly practicable one can be made ut of a sufficiently Urge cardboard box. , Take down the cardboard box that held you last Easter's hat, therefore, and follow the lead of Mrs Giuseppina Bianchi Geisser, and rou will be able to pass the shop windows where the tireless cookers are displayed without a single pans;. . Two things are necessary about your box It must have a cover that fits tightly, and it must be neither broken nor cracked. Fill the box' with cotton, sawdust or hay cotton is the best of the three and pack it in well, and perfectly dry. ' ' In the centre make a hollow place hlg enough to hold your largest casserole, covering it with many layers of the cotton. How long it should be cooked on the Are before being placed in this

improvised cooker depends entirely on the nature of the dish. These are some of Mrs. Oelsser's rules, founded on her own experience after many experiments: Potatoes should be ten minutes on the lire and one hour in the hat box. Other vegiables, ten to fifteen minutes over the gas range and two hours in the cooker.. Dried chestnuts, twenty minutes on fire and two hours and a half in cooker. Stews, from ten to thirty minutes, depending upon their nature. Ail the flavor is retained, and the Juices are preserved. A stew caa be left for four hours In the cooker without doing it any harm. Food can be kept hot for ten hours in the box. Mrs. Geisser estimates that she saves from 20 to 50 per cent on her heating bills. The city of Turin, where Mrs. Geisser Uvea, has been so taken with her idea that hundreds of families have adopted it. The local cooking school has added to its curriculum lessons . in converting hat boxes Into fireless cookers. They have slightly improved on the inventor's original idea by suggesting that the lid be fastened on with automatic button.

drink a teacup full at any time. It is the most effective way to break a cold and cure grip, as it opens . the pores, relieving congestion. Also loosens the bowels, thus breaking a cold at once. ' ' : It is inexpensive and entirely vegetable, therefore harmless.
