The Shame of the Motorist The inevitable has happened. A motorist failing to halt his car behind a street car that was discharging passengers struck one of the city's best known business men. There is no excuse for this violation of the rights of the pedestrian. Motorists should be taught the necessity of obeying traffic regulations. If the driver of an automobile hasn't enough decency to stop his
car when men, women and children are getting
out of street cars, he hasn't decency enough to be permitted to drive a car. Such a man should be sent to the county jail and kept there long enough until he develops a sense of responsibility. The accident late last week proves that there is laxity somewhere. If the police department is at fault, the remedy should be applied there. If the city ordinance is not stringent enough, it should be rectified. If the Wayne County Motor Club by assisting in the prosecution of violators can help, it should take up the matter and co-operate as does the automobile club of Cincinnati. The rights of the pedestrians in this city must be protected against automobile owners who play with human life.
THE GOLD OF THE GODS
BY ARTHUR The maid had, meanwhile brought in the coffee and Inez had been waiting to pour until Kennedy returned. She did not do so now, either, how. ever. It seemed as if she were waiting for same kind of signal from Kennedy. "What a splendid view of the park you get here," remarked Kennedy, turning toward the long, low windows that opened on a balustraded balcony "Just look at that stream of automobiles passing on the west drive." Common politeness, dictated that all should turn and look, although there was no novelty in the sight for any of us. A6 I have said, I was sitting "next to leer. To me she was a far more attractive right than any view of the park. I barely looked out of. the window. Imagine my curprise. then, at feeing her take advantage of the diversion to draw from the folds of hr dress a little vial and pour a bit of ellowish. syrupy liquid into the cup of coffee which she was preparing lor Whitney. I could not help looking at her quickly. She saw that I had seen her and raised her other hand with a linger to her lips and an explanatory glance at Whitney who was keeping the others interested. Instantly, I recognized the little vial which Craig had shoved into his waistcoat pocket. That had been the purpose of his whispered conference with her when we arrived. I said nothing, but determined to observe more closely. More coffee and more cigarettes followed, always from the same box which was now on the table. The luncheon developed almost a real conversation. For the time, under the rpell of our hostess, we nearly forgot that we were in reality bitter enemies. My real interest, as time passed, centered in Whitney and I could not help watching him closely. Was it a fact, or was it merely my imagination? He seemed quite different The pupils of bis eyes did not seem to be quite so dilated as they had been at other times, or even when he arrived. Even his heart action appeared to be more normal. I think Inez noticed it, too. There was none of the wildness in his conversation, such as there often had been at other times. Our party was prolonged beyond the time we bad expected, but, although he had much on his mind, Kennedy made no move to break it up. In fact, be did everything to encourage it. At last, however, the others did notice the time, and I think it was with sincere regret that the truce was brok i Dry, Hoarse or Painful j Coughs Quickly Ended Hove-Made Remedy flat Saves Von $2 Does k Work Thoroughly. B. REEVE en. Even then, no parting shots were indulged in. As we left, Inez thanked Kennedy for hi3 consideration, and I am sure that that In itself was reward enough. We parted from Lockwood, who wished to remain a little while, and rode down in the elevator with Whitney, a changed man. "I'll walk over to the elevated with you," he said. "I was going to my hotel, but I think 111 go down to the office instead." Evidently he had got Senora de Moche out of his mind, at least, temporarily, I thought. Then for the first time I recalled that during the whole luncheon there had been - no reference to either the Senora or Alfonso, though both must have been in nur minds often. "What was it. you had. Inez drop into Whitney's coffee?" I asked Craig as we parted from him and rode uptown. "You saw that?" he smiled. "It was pilocarpine, jaborandi, a plant found largely in Brazil, one 6f the, antidotes for stramonium poisoning. It doesn't work with every one. Bu it seems to have done so with him. It was good and I am glad to believe that the goal we are seeking is to be ours in this year of grace. But I have one criticism of the meeting and that is that it was fifteen minutes late in getting started. The meeting was advertised for 2:30 and it was 2:45 when it began. Drop five of those minutes and call it but ten, then figuring on the basis of an audience of 500 and you have a loss of time amounting to more than ten eight-hour days. Perhaps the loss was not consequental to many but it was to some who had other church engagements for the latter part of the afternoon, and to these It was a decided embarrassment I would not speak of it but as a hint for future gatherings of whatever sort. Promptness in beginning and closing is a virtue to be cultivated. If some part of the program Is tardy, then I say begin with what you have and let these tardy ones have their part if possible later, but by all means begin. In this way we will avoid violating the eighth commandment. A CITIZEN. CAPPER MAKES CHANGES TOPEKA, Kas.. Jan. 9. Boasting at the Lptos Club on Dec 21 that his Bethlehem ordnance factory had a capacity of 50 per cent in excess of the Krupps at Essen and that his munitions plants were producing 1,000,000 projectiles a month, Charles M. Schwab also said: s It is not money alone that drives men into these great enterprise, but the thrill which" comes of successful accomplishment. Amer- , ican enterprise is built upon the love of do ' ing things. . How does it happen, then, that on bids for a supply of 16-inch projectiles for- the United States navy, Hadfields of England made a price of $513 each as against Bethlehem's $775, and that the foreign concern promised delivery in sixteen months, whereas Bethlehem demanded three years? The highest bid received was that of the Midvale Company, also American, which wanted $900 each and two years' time. For 14-inch projectiles there was a similar difference in favor of the British company. When officers of the Government and navy in Washington ; contemplated these figures it is
were astounded. Their feeling
should have been one of shame, for they were in the presence of a demonstration either of greed or of inefficiency which is a reproach to the Republic. There is no hint here of the thrill that comes of successful accomplishment or the love

But did you notice how the treatment contracted the pupils of Whitney's eyes almost back to normal again?" I had and said so, adding, "But what was your idea?" "I think I've got at the case from a brand-new angle," he replied. "Unless I am greatly mistaken, when the person who is doing the doping sees that Whitney is getting .better why, I think you all noticed it, Inez and Lockwood as well as you it will mean another attempt, to substitute more cigarettes doped with that drug. I think it's bv substitution that it's being done. We'll see." At the laboratory, Kennedy called Norton and described briefiv what had happened, especially to Whitney. "Now is your chance, Norton," he added, "to do some real good work. I want some one to watch the Senora, 6ee if she, too, notes the difference in him. Understand?" "Perfectly," returned Norton.
