COLORED MUSICIAN MAKES HIS VIOLIN FOR BENEFIT CONCERT
Wealy ftoward who trtll play In benefit concert at the high school hall Friday evening will play his epeclal numbers on a violin of hla own making. The violin la considered by those who have played on It to be equal to some of the best violins made in this country. It was learned today that when the Howard concert was first proposed the ycung colored man refused to play in Richmond at a benefit for himself and requected that the money be turned over to some other colored boy. However, several months ago, the
hotel in which Howard had been workin Worcester, burned down and with it practically all of Howard's belongings, including his music, clothing, eto. The local committee immediately proposed that the benefit be turned to Howard himself partly to pay him for hi Ion in the fire. Howard . will be assisted by the choirs of the city in the concert Friday evening. The Y. M. C. A. Double Quartet will also give several numbers. The record made by young Howard at Boston Conservatory is one which many musicians envy. He completed the entire course on violin at the Boston Conservatory of Music in three years, which was a shorter time than any person, white or colored, has completed the work.. The Howard recital is being talked of as the biggest musical event of the season and indications point to a crowded house.
