"Positive," Jarvls returned. "See. there are names on the bella." And sure enough there were. Tho houao wa;in tho thirties, an Ideal location: but Just suppose that, after all, the rooms Dick Armstrong had spoken of were taken! All these thoughts circled their way rapidly through Janet's head; and then a man wh6 had been watching them interestedly, earns t and poke to Jarvts. "Were you looking for somebody?" he asked. "I was told about three weeks ago that there was a studio apartment vacant In this building," Jarvls explained. ' "Thers was." said the man promptly but I think It's been promised. It hasn't been taken yet though." he added, "so If you'd Ilk to go up. Til take you." Janet's heart had sunk. Somehow he had thought this would be Just the place, but she said nothing, only folloved Jarvls up flight after flight Of dim stairs. The place was not exactly shabby but It was old-fashioned, though " an electric light burned at the top of each flight of stairs. After . they had climbed four flights, the Janitor stopped at the landing of the topmost apartment and fitted a key Into the lock. The next moment, Janet had stepped over the threshold Into her ideal apartment The place had evidently been a loft at one time, and the entire front of the house had been left large and roomy for a single studio. There was; a big skylight that stretched over the top of he room, and two tiny windows that swung out on casements at the end of it. The celling dipped down toward the end, and a fascinating, although rickety flight of steps led up to a small balcony.. - "Jarvls, did you ever see anything like Itr Jant said, entranced. "No, I never did." Jarvla responded, "It's perfect." The part of the room under the

ECONOMY, Ind., Jan. 1. Thomas Cain discovered recently that he had unconsciously been carrying a sewing needle buried deep in his thigh ior fourteen months. He went to Indianapolis Friday where he underwent an operation for its removal. Over a year ago Mr. Cain sat down in a chair containing his wife's sewing outfit. He knew that a needle penetrated hi3 thigh but thought that it had been pulled out when he jumped up. About two weeks ago he began suffering severe pains and an X-ray examination disclosed that a needle was lodged far beneath the skin.

Janet found the back room almost as attractive. It was large and i square, and had .a small skylight, with two other large windows that opened down low in the wall. There were also an old-fashioned bathroom and a tiny kitchenette. "Have you any idea what the rent of the apartment' Is?" v questioned " Jarvls. turning to the Janitor. "Oh, yes; we get thirty-live for this," the Janitor responded, grinning. 'Thirty-five!" ejaculated Janet, and then stopped. After their experience that day with studio apartments she had no Idea that such a place would be vacant under seventy, at least. "Well," said the Janitor, certain from Janet's tone of voice that e! was pleasantly surprised, "you see, there's a lot of stairs to climb; most people object to that." . "Did you say It was promised?" said Janet. The note in her voice would have melted the heart of the stoniest landlord. A little smile , caught at the corner of Jarvis's Straight mouth as she spoke. ''Well, no mama, it ain't taken for sure, but some people said they'd us know about It. I think th lady , complained of the" stairs, and" she did say something about the ' factories In the back. . Why don't you call up the agents? There's a telephone downstairs." "Let's do that Jarvis," said Janet eagerly, and with a last look about the place Janet followed Jarvls downstairs. She waited breathlessly while he talked to the agent, and clasped her hands excitedly at apparent good news. "He says that the people haven't notified him about the apartment." Jarvis said as he rang off," and that we can have it If we want It." "If we want it," exclaimed Janet. "Well, I guess we do. Let's go right upstairs again Jarvis and look it over. I want to get it all In my mind's eye so that we can begin to plan about what to put in it. Just think, exactly what we wanted. Why it's Just like a dresm come true." STo Be rotled.

only shoes, made no noise but listened to what was going on in the chicken house. I heard one party tell another, so there were two, to come on as he had all he could carry and they started away. . It was very dark, being foggy but I could see figures going so I called "Halt," as I done in the southern confederacy, more than fifty years ago. They did not stop so I pulled old trusty in their direction, let drive and think one of them is having shot picked out of him, then pulled the .other barrel on the one ahead.- : One of . them lost his grip and let five chickens go as I got my lantern and got the five, put them back in the henhouse and found three more next morning out in the field, but I hollered to them to come again and if they were hungry I would give them two or more chickens but come in daylight and not bother after 11 o'clock, as I did not want, to be bothered in my rest, and loss of chickens too. - We have had many ' taken this fall and winter and we sold all but fifty hens and as old Josh Bays we did want to keep them, unless an editor comes to Bee us then we would like an old hen and dumplings for his dinner but if they come again the old gun is loaded with heavy shot : Best wishes to the Palladium, , E.
