FURIES OF GAS ENDANGER LIVES OF 1 5 EATONIANS
EATON, O., Dec. 26. Fifteen persons narrowly escaped asphyxiation
Monday afternoon when fumes of burfled gas from the furnace ' in the
cellar escaped through a defective pipe and filed the poolroom and apartments owned by Robert Applyby, North Cherry street. ' The fumes were not of sufficient strength to be detected and the effect Df the gas upon each individual in the building was gradual. The proprietor was the f rst overcome. Friends carried him into his apartments above and summoned a physician, who stated his symptoms gave evidence of kidney trouble. The fumes had spread all through the building, and the condition of Mr. Applyby became worse. Another physician was called. Members of Applyby's family began to feel 111 and the second .physician was of the opinion that something eaten at the family dinner was responsible for ptomaine poisoning. The next victim was Mid. Swafford, of this city, who was overcome in the poolroom below. He was taken to his home and given medical" attention. Several others were seized with severe headaches and dizziness and left the poolroom, and it was some time before the real cause was determined. Roy Cole, well known local lad, had gone into the cellar and was found barely In time to respond to resuscitation efforts. Besides Applyby, Swafford and Cold, others affected by the fumes were Appleby's wife, Mr. and Mrs. George Appleby and daughter, Miss Mabel, Dr. and Mrs. V. M. Gregg, Rollo Wehrley, Charles Balger, Earl Waggoner, Louis Weaver, Sr., George Clark and Col. i

EAGLES ENTERTAIN AT BEAUTIFUL HALL FOR 600 CHILDREN
A real for sure Santa Claus party that was the annual Christmas celebration provided by the Eagles' lodge
at its home on South Seventh street for six hundred children yesterday afternoon. The happiness' of holiday season, of boyhood unchecked, and of . Joy untainted' shone from the eyes of the noisy children, thrilled In their laughter and barked in their shouts. An envy stirred the hearts of the many grown people who left comfortable homes to watch the children absorb holiday "goodies' and receive timely- gifts from the hand of the Saint from the North Pole. All ages from one to seventeen were represented. The big boy and the infant sat side by side in perfect companionship. There was no dividing line between children from poor and rich homes. Some pinched, .white faces were there but not many, to &et off wind reddened cheeks of most of the throng. Several come without overcoats but all looked warm.
After a short program, Santa Claus distributed bountiful sacks of candy and small and appropriate gifts. The program follows: - Song, Elisabeth Farwig; Recitation, Thelma Daub; Recitation, Mary Lybarger; Recitation, Helen Hall; Selection, , orchestra; Recitation, Nellie Lambert; Duet, Elizabeth Farwig and Thelma Daub; Recitation, Oscar Cordell; Recitation, Chester Collins; Selection, orchestra; Recitations, Kenneth Holtkamp, Russell and Elwood Swanton, Helen Webster, Marie Baldwin; Presentation of gifts to children; Selection, orchestra. Wrede's orchestra furnished the music. .. ,,
