THE MAGIC APPLE Once upon a time there was a King who had a crippled son, and - though he had . sent for doctors from all over the land, none of them could cure the little Prince. When the Prince grew older the King wanted to find him a wife, but no one-wanted a cripple for a husband, even though he was a
prince, for his face was drawn out of shape as well as his body. At last he sent for a wise old witch, and when she came she told ' the King the only thing that would cure the Prince was a peculiar kind of apple that grew on a high tree on an island in the middle of the sea, and It must be the very . tip-top apple on the tre9. The oth- ' ers would not cure the Prince. , ; ."I can take you to the sea and ' show you the Island," said the old witch, "but you must find some one who can get the apple, and I forgot to tell you. the tree is guarded vby a creature that spits fire at , every one who comes near it, so that it will, not be easy to get the magic apple." . - The king sent for all the young men who lived in his kingdom and told them that- to the one who would bring the apple to him he would give a houseand land and everything that was , needed to make a good home and farm. But while many tried to get the apple all of them were frightened away by the dreadful fiery creature who guarded It ;'. At last a poor orphan peasant came to the King and told him he would bring the apple to the crippled prince even if be lost his life. "I am all alone in the world, and it .will not matter to anyone if I die, but to you and your people the life of , the prince means much. When you die the people want a king and queen, and I will do what I can to help you." , ,. , . So the peasant was taken to the Island and the king and the servants waited and waited, but still he did not return, and at last they decided the fiery animal had killed him and the king and his servants went home. When the peasant approached the fiery, creature it threy from its mouth long streams of fire, and the peasant knew he must first con
quer this creature before he could
climb for the apple.
He went near to the animal, and
each time it would, almost touch him with its fiery tongue the peasant would step back a little until
he had the creature very near the
water. Then he started for the tree again, and . this , time he Jumped far into the water and the fiery animal after him, but .as soon as its head was near the water' the peasant jumped up and came down on the fiery creature's head, which, of course closed its mouth and put its head under water. The peasant held it there until it drowned and watched it sink from sight, then he ran to the tree and climbed up into it. Up and up he went until he thought he must reach the sky soon,, but instead,, he reached a very beautiful - house and garden filled with flowers and under a-tree sat two beautiful girls one witb an apple in her hand. : I'So you have killed our enemy and come for the apple for the prince," said the one who held the apple, r The "peasant was too surprised to answer, but the girl told him to take the apple, and that she and her maid 'would go with him. "How will you ever get out of this tree?" asked the peasant when he recovered from his astonishment. "It is far too high for ladies to get out of." , " "Oh! you will see," replied the

Over at Joseph Moore School they are going to have a real Santa Claus fund and keep a special pile of toys and things there at the school until about the last day, and then bring it over to the Palladium office for Santa Claus to distribute. Every boy and girl in Miss Dunlop's room said they knew of something they could bring, so it looks as though they were the banner Santa Claus Helpers how. But others who have offered to be his helpers, too, are: Emelyn Land, Janet and Virginia Harris, George Krueger, Fred Bohannon The Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts and among the merchants: Breton V Toy Store, Woolworth Five and Ten Cent Store, Nicholson's, The Hoosier Store, Grand Leader, Bartel & Rohe, and Ackerman's

You have : had all the hard time getting here." - To his surprise, the peasant found himself in the grounds of the king when he . followed the path the girl pointed out, and in a short time he was in the presence of the king with the Apple and the two girls beside him. ."Here is the apple, Your Majesty," said the peasant, kneeling before the king.
i'Who are the maidens you have
brought with you?' asked the king
- "I will answer - that," said the
girl who had held, the apple. "I am a princess who was imprisoned in the tip-top of the apple tree, and the - creature who guarded it was
put there by a witch, who hated my father because be would not make
her his queen." ;f .; ; T . She told him that, to' punish him, his first daughter should be the bride of a dragon or be a prisoner all the rest of her life,' and when

I was old enough to marry she kept her word by carrying me off with only my maid for company. :- "Every year the dragon would ask if I was ready to become his bride, and each time I said no. ."You will' wait with an apple in your hand for someone to rescue you -then," he would reply and be silent for another year. "But I knew some day someone would come for the apple, because I heard .the old witch telling the dragon to watch and see if I dropped an apple. It was the only thing she ' was afraid of, as my eyes would be opened, and I would know everything If it was found. "As soon as this young man came in sight I knew all about the prince and that he had come to rescue us." The crippled prince was given the apple, and when he ate it his face and body became strong and well. Then he married the Princess and the peasant the same day married the maid and they all live! happy ever after.
In the Philippine Islands lizards and chamellons are almost household pets because of destroying insects and flies.
