WHEAT SCORES BID ADVANCES ON DUMA VOTE
CHICAGO, Dec. 16. Big advances in the valuue of wheat were scored today with a swiftness equal to that with which prices of late had dropped. On a wild rush to the buying side, the market went soaring 10 a bushel before the rise was checked. General reversal of opinion as to the chances of a quick stop to the war .formed the sole, reason for the advance. Judgments of the situation seemed to be largely .based on assertions that no comment or suggestion from the United States government would go forward with the German peace proposal to Great Britain and her allies. The course of the Russian duma in rejecting the peace offer acted also as a decided bullish influence. Opening prices, which ranged from 2y2 to 10'c higher, were followed ty 'many rapid changes within the initial limits, and then a comparative pause at about 5 to 7c above yesterday's finish. - -First Quotations. First quotations of May and July wheat, the pricipal options, were respectively $1.59 to $l.S4i4 and $1.38 to $1.40. . , Corn sympathized with the strength of wheat. Upturns, however, were only moderate, and trading not heavy. After opening 1 to 2 7-8c higher, the mtrket hardened a little further, and then sagged about lc. Oats duplicated the action of corn.
Commission houses were the chief buyers. Weakness ruled, in provisions, although declines were not severe. The down turns were the result plainly of the less promising outlook for peace.
