of good cheer were ale, vinegar, nutmeg and apples, which were roasted hot, and sizzled in tne aie. The Wassail bowl was often of heavy silver and a feature of the Christmas festivities, often ornamented with ribbons and sprays of rosemary. "That's for remembrance." The peacock also held an important place in the old Christmas feast It was brought in, not by the servants, but by the most distinguished lady guest, who bore it into the banquet haD to the sound of music, the rest of the ladies following. The peacock was prepared by first carefully stripping the skin off without disturbing the plumage. The bird was then stuffed with spiees and sweet herbs. The peacock was anciently in demand for banquets, served as a Die with the . nlumed crest ap pearing at one - end, while at the other the tail in all its splendor. A dish of great antiquity is the boar's head, which was to be found in all bills of fare for coronation and other festivities. In mediteval England it was a custom to commence all great Christmas festivities with a solemn eeremoay bringing In the great boar's head as the laitial dish. A robe made in Venice of lavender embroidered with Venetian gold was given her for a Christmas gift, among Other articles of fine attire. Her Majesty's fondness for jewels was realized by the Earl of Leicester, who gave her a fan with feathers mounted with gold on one side, and two beautiful emeralds surrounded with diamonds and rubies on the other, literally covering the fan with precious stones. Christmas Superstitions in Germany
If a dog howls the night before Christnua, it will go mad within the year. If the light is extinguished on Christeve, someone in the house will die. If you steal anything on Christmas eve without being caught, you can steal safely for a year. If you eat a raw egg after fasting on Christmas morning, you will be able to carry heavy weights. What Happened The Pilgrims, who condemned all church festivals, spent their first Christmas in America working hard all day long, in cold and stormy weather, and commenced the building of the first house in Plymouth in 1620. Sir Isaac Newton, whose grand discovery of the law of gravitation, resulted from the simple fact of an apple falling to the ground, was born on Christmas day, 1642. Great battles fought on Christmas day are an exception, but one is the Battle of Okeechobee, Fla., in which Zaehaxy STEAMING RADIATORS ARE DANGER SIGN Automobile owners are proceeding with caution today, after the first weather cold enough to freeze the cold water In the bottom of radiators.
