V Why Beef Costs More

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 1914, the vali 'fi ffresh beef exported was $1,000,000. This yea: the same period, the exports of fresh beef were $29,000,000. Putting this in "plain language," which both Quakers and others can understand, we sent twenty-nine times as much beef abroad last year as we did two years ago. In the last six years the number of beef cattle in the United States has not increased in proportion to the consumption of meat but has decreased by nearly 8,000,000. The war has given the packers a good market for meat products, hence they can afford to pay good prices for cattle. The farmer figures he can make more money feeding his products to live stock than by selling it on the market. Hence the price of the things he markets is higher. The packers snap up the farmer's cattle, but for every cow, steer and bull killed this year, there wil be a consequent shortage next year. So, logically, it seems to us, meat prices instead of decreasing next year, will be still higher.

He Flies to Congress O. D. Bleakley of Franklin, Pa., representative-elect, made an aeroplane flight from his home to Washington a few weeks ago. He declared he was the first man to come to congress in. an aeroplane. Shades of the fathers of the constitution ! When that Instrument was drawn up and ratified, and for a generation and more later, the fathers feared that the country would become so large that the solons would experience all sorts of trouble in traveling to congress. : The old National Road, for instance, was built to offset a transportation handicap. And now a member flies to congress in an aeroplane. Verily, times do change !

with dealers selling the same grade for $6. Municipalized utilities have reduced the cost of light, heat, and water. If Terre Haute can compete with dealers on the coal supply, why not municipalize a few more of the industries that are responsible for the high cost of living? It may be paternalistic for the government to' look after its citizens, but we have noticed that when a father looks after his son's interests they usually boom in double quick time.

Municipal Coal Mine When Terre Haute opened a municipal coal mine, it offered fuel at $2.75 a ton in competition

A Baby Shortage We have heard of all kinds of food and material shortages, and so were surprised when pincinnati reported a shortage of babes for adoption. A news dispatch from that city describes the shortage and explains its cause. It follows: "The shortage was declared to be the worst that has existed in many years., and to fill the 50 applications now on file and approved at the Children's Home, Ninth and Plum streets, only six babies are available. "A constant inscrease in the number of childless pairs who have found home incomplete without a baby, is the chief cause of the shortage, according to Shelley D. Watts, visitor for the Home., He said it always has more calls than can be filled, but the situation just now is much worse than usually. 'There is a scramble on for the foster parentage of the six little ones now in care of the institution. Two of these, twin girls, 2 years old, are the cause of much of the trouble. They are ideal youngsters, but it is seldom that one family desires to assume the burden of more than one baby at a time. Both have light blue eyes and light hair. "One thing in particular which was noted In canvassing the demands for children was the fact that 40 of the fifty applications on file call for blue-eyed and light-haired baby girls. The little misses are the most popular in all cases, and thus far the children offered for adoption in the majority of cases have been of this class. "Opinion was ventured that the war was an indirect cause ' of the shortage of children. In

creased ability of native-born mothers to care for

their children because of the work caused by

present conditions was offered as another reason.

Better wages for working mothers, also caused

by the war, was advanced as a cause for the de crease in numbre of children offered." !

ELKHART. Ind., Dec. 15. "Tanlao will make friends In any home in which it goes," was the opinion expressed on December 6 by J. M. Benton, 70 years old, of 675 Strong Ave., this city. Mr. Benton then told , how Tanlac had made friends in his home. After considering his case almost hopeless, he said, Tanlac went straight to the seat of his rheumatic troubles and benefited him greatly. "I thought that I would never be any better," Mr. Benton declared. 'The rheumatic pains were most severe in my limbs, especially in damp weather. At night, I simply suffered agonies. Of course, I didn't 6leep much because of the pains and would just toss and roll about the bed.. "Friends told me about Tanlac and I decided to try it. The rheumatic
