LITTLE THEATRE EARNS UNSTINTED PRAISE OF FAIR-SIZED RICHMOND AUDIENCE
The Little Theatre of Indiana made f leas credit Is due Aunt Abby Trow
i etroag appeal last night at the high tchool in its first appearance outside of Indianapolis, where its first presentatlons were given a week ago under Carl Bernhardt's direction. There was a faJr steed audience made up chiefly from the membership of the Drama league, which was responsible (or the appearance of the Little Theatre productions In Richmond. Probably "Polly of Pogue's Run," by IV. 0. Dates, of Indianapolis, a tense little drama, struck deepest feeling and Crew the sympathies of the audience more closely in touch with the work of the Little Theatre; although "The Lost
3ilk Hat," a short farcical comedy, pro- j
Sliced an effect of warmth for which it 'ave followed, instead of prei i" absorbing little war-time Ability Not Questioned There was not an unconvincing moment In the play and the acting left no question as the Individual ability of very one of the cast, Polly Trowbridge and Governor Morton handling their parts so deftly as to create intense emotion In the audience. No
bridge, who, with no less ability, produces the necessary relief after Polly -has tried to kill Governor Morton and finally, through the weight of his personality, has confessed the names of bis old Wayne county friends who are pledged, to shoot or stab him, "Seventeen," from Booth Tarkington'a novel, was the play presented first and was weakly amusing. - She characterizations could best be adapted tor Penrod dramatizations and the seventeen-year-old Miss Pratt and her prattling formed quite a marked contrast with Polly Trowbridge, the loyal little rebel, with her serious thinking and tragic beliefs. Only four persons appeared in "Seyenteen. Carl Goe appears in half of "Seventeen" and al of "The Lost Silk Hajt" to advantage. He is also In Polly of Rogue's Run, but is remembered in "The Lost Silk Hat" as the Caller, a young man who has quarreled with his sweetheart and then has rushed wildly from the house without his silk hat. Trials of Rejected Suitor He pleads with a suspicious labor-
er, an unsympathetic clerk, and then a dilating poet for assistance, and exasperated by their refusals, returns to the house for his hat and remains with his love, much to the sorrow of the poet, who believes a great opportunity has been lost by the young man to become a martyr to his love and have bis fame exploited In the poet's lyrics. . - The stage and scenery were adequate for both "Seventeen" and "The Lost Silk Hat," although the Ljttje Theatre was somewhat Inconvenienced by the transference of its activities from its home. Warm praise for the presentations was showered upon Carl j Bernhardt and the Little Theatre mem barn, bnth nerannallv and thrnnch linrt. '
