RETIRING OFFICIALS
LOOK INTO FUTURE
When the terms of County Treasurer
Chamness, County Recorder Parsons and County Commissioner' Doddridge expire, January 1. the Progressive
party will no longer.be represented In the elective offices of Wayne county. All three of these men have returned to the Republican party. , Benjamin Parsons was elected on theh Progressive ticket in 1912 and ChamnesB and Doddridge were elected on the "Bull Moose" ticket in 1914.

lis duties as commissioner on the side and he will continue farming. "I will remain in Richmond at least until school is dismissed next spring. I am not ready to make public my plans at this time," said Albert Cham ness today., . , "My plans for after January 1 are till hanging fire. I will probably take a month's rest and then enter some kind of business," said Parsons. Albert Steen, sheriff, who was elected on the Republican . ticket in the 1914 election will give up his office January 1. His plans are not definite but he Is considering moving to California 1 ' . .

HOLDS TITLE AS CROWS'
ROOST
Again Wayne county has Jumped into the national limelight. A recent report of the Federal Department of agriculture says that the largest crows' roost in the United States is located in this county. The exact location is not specited. It is estimated that between ten and fifty thousand crows spend part of each year in a five acre tract of woodland.

BERKELEY, Cal., Dec. 8. Captain Carlos Gilman Calkins, . navigating officer on Admiral Dewey's flagship, the Olympia at Manila Bay, is at the point of death today at his home here. He has been ill for several months. Captain Calkins was retired from active service about ten years ago.

was 2,392, according to the official
count made public today. The vote was: Wilson, 33,553; Hughes, 31,161.
INVENTOR IS DEAD
SAN TRANCISCO, Cal., Dec. 8 William Hatteroth, a California pioneer and an associate of Alexander Graham Bell in the latter's early experiments with the telephone, died last night at his home here.

PITTSBURGH, Pa., Dec. 8. Spot furnace coke has reached $8.00 a ton on the Pittsburgh market for the third time this year.

KELLY IS UNABLE " TO SEE PINCHOT
President Kelly of Earlham college, who returned from St.' Louis this morning did not get to see Gifford Pinchot to ask him to speak' at a farm conference to be held in Richmond in January or February. Mr. Pinchot had not reached St. Louis when President Kelly left there at midnight. President Kelly attended the meeting of the Commission on Christian Education, which is part of the Council of Federated churches which is meeting in St. Louis this week.
' LONDON, Dec. 8. Lloyds reports the sinking by submarines of fixe Daniah .steamship Nexos, 1,013 tons gross, and of ; the banish steamship Julia Benito. The crews of both vessels were landed.
COMPROMISE ON SUIT . Twenty witnesses from - Randolph county made a trip of no avail today when they appeared in circuit to testify in a replevin suit for $400 brought by William "Manor against L. L. Ford. Manor and Ford reached a compromise agreement and the suit, which was venued here for, trial today, was dismissed. .
An attachment for a camera-carrying cases that also carries tripods when folded, has been invented by an Iowa man. .
