Eschbach for Speaker Jesse Eschbach of Warsaw is slated for speak
er of the lower branch of the general assembly
when it convenes in January. He was Republican floor leader for the last two sessions. Eschbach
will be an ideal speaker. During two sessions of
the legislature when the Democrats had absolute control and the Republicans could only sit by and try to enter a protest now and then, Eschbach guided the destiny of his party. Eschbach and Earl Crawford were the two men who opposed the Cook "steam roller" in the 1913 assembly. Both were crushed by the ruthless manner in which Cook, who was defeated for secretary of state in the last election, forced Democratic machine bills through the house. Eschbach condemned Cook time and again on the floor of the house. As early' as 1913, he predicted in one of his speeches that Cook could thwart justice. and fair play then, but that ultimately he would pay the price for his policy. The election early this month saw the fulfillment of Eschbach's prediction.
She Loved the Dog but Had to Pay the Fine Mrs. Annie Pryor Smith, a resident of Beechi hurst, L. I., was fined $25 and costs for striking a conductor on a Long Island railroad train who protested against the presence of her pet dog in a passenger train. The judge who heard the case saw no reason why the woman should be spared the fine. Neither do those of us who have no legal training. If the rules of the railroad prohibit the presence of dogs in passenger cars, women who want the company of their pets should ride with them in the baggage cars. Conductors have enough worries without being compelled to fight to sustain the rule that the place for dogs is in the baggage car. .
( Help Yourself to a Smile A smile doesn't cost you a cent. Neither does it cost you a cent to enjoy the smile of some happy-go-lucky mortal who believes the old world is full of happiness and sunshine even in the days when the sky is cloudy and your outlook is gloomy. When you feel down and out and are in the dumps, help yourself , to a smile and you'll feel better.
Early Christmas Shopping Hardly a periodical that comes .to a home
which does not make, an appeal for early ; shop
ping. A few women heed the call, most of them
disregard it. Merchants and their salesmen and saleswomen unite in asking co-operation of
Christmas shopping. Leslie's Weekly makes this appeal :
Now! Christmas seems a long way off. Only
when the tang of a cool December day or the warm glow from some shop window jot some baby
question about Santa Claus touches the quick of
our memories do we get the "Christmas feel" that Riley wrote about. Then the thoughts leap ahead to happy little faces around the Christmas tree; to grateful, trembling hands
opening the hollied love gifts of Youth that are
the recompense of Age to the crackling logs, the
merry candles and the bells across the snow. But a moment later the vision fades and we're back to the work-a-day, every-day world with its all-too-little of the righteous blessedness that comes from Christmas' giving. And yet it is now of all
times that we should let our honest wish for another's happy Christmas grow into being. We
should remember that we must -begin now to
look and to choose and to buy the things that we
are going to give later; that we must not wait until the last, mad week that is a week of terror
for those toilers who serve us in the shops and stores and on the wagons and in the offices. We shall make their Christmas as miserable as our own is merry if .we put off our buying. We can bring happiness to hundreds of homes if we spread our Christmas spirit to serve those who serve us if we shop now.
Legs Increase in Value Along with the rising price of other necessities of life the price of a man's leg is higher, according to a' decision of the appellate court of Illinois in affirming judgment of $18,500 won-by a man who lost a leg in 1911. The court held: "The damage may be larger than the court would have sustained a few years ago. We cannot, however, be unmindful of the fact that the money value of life and health is appreciating and the purchasing power of money is steadily diminishing during recent years." There is logic in the reasoning of the court. If it is more difficult to make a living now than it was ten years ago, and if the dollar buys less than it did then, it is natural to infer that the members of the body used in making a living are of more value to a man today than they were a decade ago.
"Don't Scare Mamma. So said a little girl whose feet were cut off by a New York trolley car. She addressed these words to the physician in the ambulance -that was carrying her to the hospital. In this crisis she showed more consideration for her parents than many parents do for their children when they are overtaken by misfortune.'

Automobile Prices Soaring Prices on all materials that enter into an automobile's construction have advanced from 20 to 50 per cent during the last few months. Most manufacturers have already advanced prices or have announced their intention of doing so. The Ford Motor Company as usual are the first to lower prices and the last to raise, but the tremendous increase in prices of all articles used in the manufacture of cars is beyond the control of men. Present prices of Ford cars are still in effect, but are not guaranteed against advance for a single day, nor will orders be accepted for future delivery at the present prices. If you intend to buy a Ford in the spring, by all means, buy it now. Bethard Auto Agency - 1117 Main Street
