1 Delivering the Goods. , The expression usually it attached to a person who has enterprise and is able to accomplish that which he sets out to do. Id trade, a boy usually delivers the goods which have been sold through the ability of a salesman. So. the metaphor takes on an increased meaning when used as a compliment. A man who can deliver the goods is a man who has ability to make, sell, or deliver commodities. .
Shop Early. Remember that Christmas will be here before you have made your purchases. Other years have seen you dilatory and neglectful. Make a change this year. Shop early ; please the salesmen and saleswomen; save yourself fatigue and dissatisfaction. Shop early and be thankful that you are not one of the. unlucky few who, stricken with poverty, are unable to shop at all. Remarkable Remarks. Under the foregoing caption, the Independent prints the following, which are deep enough to be worth our perusal: Henry Ford I am not interested in parties at all. Prof. William M. Sloane Jingoism is a disgusting vice. General von Hindenburg The main thing is discipline. General Brusiloff The future is in the hands
of God. Woodrow Wilson I haven't read a serious book through in fourteen years. David Ratroff The Federal League is one of the 20,000 leagues under the sea. Edward Bernstein Germany should declare her readiness for an armistice. Prof. M. V. O'Shea Merely telling children to stop talking won't solve the problem. John Brooks Leavitt The practice of the law by its self, tends to sharpen, not to broaden the mind. E. H. Southern I own five Elizabethan fourpost beds and I want to get into them and rest a while. Samuel Gompers The eternal problem with which the labor movement has to cope is control of property.
Miss Alice Carpenter I have found that there is a psychological difference between men and women. President A. Lawrence Lowell There is something in life worth doing besides what is forbidden.
Germany is England's Best Friend
This seems to be contrary to the accepted belief, for both nations are at grips on the battle
fields of France and Belgium. P. A. Vaile, barrister of the New Zealand Supreme Court, and author of "Wake Up, England," is the parent of the slogan, and in an article in the Independent of recent date shows how the war clarified the
British way of thinking and brought about pro
gressive legislation and reforms that no staid Britisher believed possible three years ago.
Some of the arguments he adduces as proof of
his proposition follow: "The Germans have done more in two years of warfare to advance our social legislation, to promote and encourage the use of British brains than would have been done in a hundred years of normal peace development.". , "The women have arisen never to sink back again. They have felt what it means to be their own women." ; "Who, of England, before the war dared to talk of nationalizing the railroads? It was impossible. It is practically done." "Under the stress, of-war, 'his drinking time was curtailed, much to his benefit and to that of his women and children." "Would any one have dreamed that the organization of the privately owned munitions factories, the establishment of government 'munition factories and villages that has taken place, state socialism of the widest and best kind, could have come in a little over a year in England, the slowest moving country, of first class powers, in the world?" . "Before the war the man that preached preferential tariff within the British Empire was
looked upon as almost crazy. Now every one is crying out that it must be done." "Municipal bacon shops ! A minimum wage !
Governmental control of the wheat supply I Ad
vance, shades of Henry Ford, tell us is this the England that we knew, wallowing in the rut of
convention, glued to the car rails of tradition!"
"To wake up England was a stupendous task
that for its accomplishment required no less than
the stupendous German war machine."
And as a commentary let us suggest that it
may take a gigantic national calamity to arouse America to a sense of the danger lurking in the
awakening of England.
