THE PRINCE AND HIS SWEETHEART Once upon a time there lived a prince who would not wed until he had found a maiden he could love very dearly, j 1 One day the prince was riding along the road and stopped 'for a drink of water a tttae door of a poor peasant woman, and her daughter, who was very beautiful, gave the Prince a cup of water. The Prince could not take his eyes from the beautiful maiden. "I have found tho maiden I will wed." the Prince told the King that night when he returned to the castle. When the King found out the Prince had chosen the daughter of a poor peasant for his wife he was very angry, and said he wcrald not wed her. "Then I will never marry," said the Prince. "I love only the beautiful Olga (for that was the name of the peasant girl) and I will remain single unless you give your consent to our mariage." ' Now the King was so worried after he bad teen the beautiful Olga that he had her taken to an island in the middle of a big lake filled with seaserpents. ! i " When the Prince found out what his father had done he told the King he would not live in the castle; he could live In a house on the shore of the

lake, where he could see the home of

the one he loved, even if he could not reach her, and he would remain true to her, and never, marry at all.. The King told him he could leave the castle if he wlBhed, but that he should have him watched, as well as the beautiful Olga, and that they should never meet. ' , 1 One ' nJght : when the moon was bright in the sky, the beautiful Olga sat looking out of the window of her prison in the lake, when she saw a little fairy on a moonbeam coming straight' for. her window. " ' "Do not be sad, my beautiful Olga," said the fairy, "the Quen has sent me to help you. ' Let down your beautiful jjair. . ' , . '-' Olga took down the bright, long Colls and it grew longer and longer as It fell about her, until It almost covered her. , "Turn your back to the window," said the fairy, "and do not look around until you hear your name." Olga did as the fairy told her, and the fairy wound the ends of Olga's hair around her wand and went out on the moonbeam which led right to the house where the Prince lived. . . The Prince sat alone. by the lake; all bis servants were asleep, for the hour was almost midnight. He did not see the fairy until she etood beside him with the ends of Olga's bright hair about her wand. ; "Do not look so sad my Prince," said the fairy, "the Queen has sent me to help you. See, do you know whose hair. this is?" . "It is the hair of her I love. There Is no hair in the world as beautiful as hers." "Look," said the fairy, as she put the wand on the ground, and there appeared before the Prince a bridge of gold and the fairy took him by the hand and told him to follow her. Right over the lake the fairy led the Prince on a bridge of the beautiful golden hair of his sweetheart. "Call her name," said the fairy a3 they came to the window where Olga sat.

The Prince spoke her name softly, and Olga turned and the bridge disappeared. The next' day the Prince could not be found, and the King sent out his soldiers to search the country for him. At last ; one of the soldiers told the King he had better go to the bouse in the lake. The King said there was no way the Prince could have gotten there, as the sea dragons would have roared and warned the servants. But the soldiers Insisted, and so the sea serpents were killed, and the King crossed the lake in a boat, and, of course, found the Prince, When the King heard that the Prince had crossed to his sweetheart on a bridge made of her hair he Bald that he would give his consent to their mariage, for if the Prince could brave the danger of being devoured by the sea monsteres, and Olga was willing also to risk her life for her lover, he would no longer keep them apart, but they would not tell him how the golden hair was carried to the shore and the King said they "should keep their secret.

CO-EDS AGAIN PROVE GOOD SCHOLARSHIP

Again women students at Earlham college have proved themselves superior to the men. Last week, "warnings" about poor standings were sent to 65 boys out of 146, while only 68 out of 187 girls received them. . ; , The "day dodgers" received fewer "warnings" than the dormitory students. Of the dorm, boys, 59 percent received the slips while only 68 percent of the "day dodgers" were blow the average in their studies. In Earlham hallv 43 percent of the student?
