'i Copyright 1916, by the McClure N ; - . THE1 TWO GUARDS ' Once upon a time there was a King who bad eo much gold and so many
precious stones in his vaults under the castle that he had to have a guard to watch over them. ! The day, guard's name was Kuva,
ewspaper Syndicate, New Ycrk,
and the man who watched by night was called Nala. -,'' One night Nala thought he had better look into the vaults and see that his master's treasures were safe, and when he did he was shocked to find that all the gold had disappeared. Frightened half out of his wits, Nala rushed to the King and awakened hfm in the middle of the night to tell him what had happened. The 'King jumped out of his bed, and throwing over his shoulders an ermine cape hurried into the vaults under the castle sure that Nala must be out of his senses. But he found the gold gone just as Nala had said. . Then Kuva was called and was told what had happened, and Nala wept and said: "Oh! Kuva, we are ruined; the gold is gone, and we are the only guards. What shall we do?" "What shall we do?" repeated Kuva. "Pray, do not say we, my dear Nala; I have- nothing to do with it; you reported, the loss; the treasure
was there when I last visited ' the vaults:' " ":' -r-. "Your Majesty, it is plain to be seen that Nala has your gold; seize him,1 1 Implore you, before he escapes. After he has been in prison a while, he' will "you " where ;he has hidden the gold, I am' isure."' Nala was too. much., astonished to make any resistance, and so the soldiers took him off. to prison, and every day he was visited by the King and asked to tell where the gold was hidden.' ' v But as poor Nala, did not: steal it, he could not tell, and so day after day he "stayed there until at last it was a year, and the King had given up visiting him. ; . . . v ' -, But. Nala's wife knew her husband was not the thief, and she did" not dare say this to the Kinf lest she, too, should be cast into prison, and so end all chances of ever clearing the good name of her husband. Now it happened that Kuva's wife was taken ill, and Nala's wife disguised herself as a nurse and took care of her, that she might better watch the movements of Kuva. One night when the house was still and Kuva thought every one slept but himself, he took a candle and went into the cellar of his house. But Nala's wife was awake, and followed him; .she dressed herself in black, so she could easily hide, and her face was covered with a black mask, as well.
Kuva went to the cellar and lifted a fiat stone that was hidden under the earth, then he let himself down and dropped the 'stone over him. . Nala's wife' waited until the next day, when Kuva - was at - the castle, and,' going to the cellar, she lifted the stone and let herself down into the holer as. Kuva had done.. Then she lighted a candle she carried and looked about; all was black and damp, but ahead she saw a door. This ' she v tried to open, but It " was locked, and the; brave women wondered how she would be able to see what was v. on . the other side of - that door, , when she saw a spot on the door thatr looked "darker than the other spots of dampness, and she ran her, finger, over it. , -,'lnstantly . the door opened, and the brave woman saw within shelves filed with bags. . When she opened them she found they, were filled with gold, and she knew she had found the King's gold. v- But how was she to get the King there to see it, for she knew to.- teli him would only mean . that Kuva would be accused by the King, and tell him that she was accusing him to free her husband, and ; the gold . would be ; removed before .the King could see it. .- The next night, when Kuva went into the cellar and went down into the hole, Nala's wife followed, and when Kuva let down the. stone she pulled a big iron chest over the stone. ;- Of course, Kuva ; could
not raise the stone when he tried to come out of the hole, and so he had to remain - there. ' , - Then -Nala's wifewent to the King and told him if he would take a servant and come with her she would show him Where his gold was hidden. ' Of course, the King thought that Nala's: wife was I giving ; up the gold her husband had stolen, and he, went with her, but was surprised when she

led him to the home of Kuva, and still more so when the stone was removed and out came Kuva, almost dead from fright and hunger. Of course, the King knew Nala's wife spoke the
truth when she told him the gold was hidden in the hole, and he had Kuva arrested and sent to prison, where poor Nala had stayed for so long, i , Tomorrow's story ''Elsie's Dream'.
