COKE SHORTAGE DUE LARGELY TO GAR SCARCITY
OONNELLSV1LLE. Pa., Not. 16. The car situation continues to be the dominating factor-In the production and shipment of coke. There is not only an Increasing shortage of cars, hut the Irregularity and delay in placing such cars are are available tend to make the situation even more acute. With the Sunday lull in which to father equipment the railroads last Monday were able In some instances to provide 100 per cent of the requirements, but each succeeding day saw such reductions that on Wednesday only 20 per cent of the cars needed were available. The embargo placed upon traffic west bound from 'Pittsburgh does not include coke, and some hope for the immediate future la felt in consequence. The combined tonnage from the district, witli the coal reduced to coke equivalent, was 546,000 tons, a slight gain over the preceeding week. The market for spot coke has eased off a little, latest sales being reported at $7 a ton instead of $7.20 which prevailed late last week.

Our old political friend Dame Rumor has been extremely busy with probable resignations from the president's cabinet, but where she la at her best Is when it comes to the question of the identities of those likely to fill the abandoned posts. . ' Frank L. Polk, Solicitor of the State DepartNtt, is Poken of in certain Administration circles here at almost certain to succeed Secretary Lansing, in tKXevent of the latter'a resignation, and it is said that such action is contemplated by him because of poor health. ' Henry Morgenthau, former Ambassador to Turkey, and a personal friend of the President, is regarded as likely to succeed William G. McAdoo, aa Secretary of the Treasury, although another story comes from financial circles in New York to the effect -that Congressman Carter S. Glass, of Virginia, is booked for that job. Mr. McAdoo, It is said, wishes to resign that he may better care for his business affairs. Vance McCormick, chairman of the Democratic National Committee and Senator Walsh, of Montana, are also said to be looked upon by the president as cabinet material, all of course, being based upon the possibility of the resignation of Secretaries Redfield and Baker or Attorney-General Gregory and Secretary Daniels.
