. Copyright 1916, by the MeClure N I Whew! -whew! whew!" whistled the wind. The fields were covered with a blanket of snow and the ponds were frozen. The bushes bent beneath the weight of the icicles. , In a ehed through which the wind whistled lay a man on a cot whose only covering was rags. The snow drifted in the broken window and the fireplace had not a stick of wood with v hich to make a blaze. It was very plain that the sick man was alone, poor and without food or fire. Presently there was a Jangle of bells,-and before the cottage there drew up a fine sleigh drawn by a pair of pranc
ing black horses whose silver harness glistened In the light. Within sat a man clothed in a rich fur robe that was buttoned with jewels. This man kicked open the door and strode to the side of the cot. "Ivan," he said roughly, "I am tired ,of your laziness get up at once and make my coat or I will have you turned out into the snow." The sick man protested, but the rich visitor shouted that he must have a fine silken coat by the following week or he would , know the reason why. Now, this fine i man in the sleigh was really the brothj er of poor Ivan, yet he had no feeling I for. the illness .of . hla nearest relation I and did all in his power to make his ' life sad. Ivan drew the rags up over his shiv- ' ering form to keep out the cold wind. Again there came a knock at the door, it was pushed open and in stalked a

big club and began to beat him fierce ly about his head and back. Out of the cabin he dashed, the stick still pursuing him. He tore down the road, his., cries filling the air, but the stick never stopped. '. The people of the village, who bated his mean ways, laughed as he crashed along with the ctick striking him at every step, and they were glad when he vanished beyond the river, never to return. For then the, young brother, Ivan, came into his rich brother's wealth and estate and was soon the most beloved and happiest roan in, the whole country. No poor man was turned from his gate without help; he lived to make others happy, and over his walls he hung the cloth of gold which the magic stick had given him. chubby dwarf with a big Christmas tree on his back. "I have lost my way, friend," he said cheerily as he looked about the cold, shabby room, "and I would like to spend the night here." "You are welcome," said Ivan feebly. "But there is nothing I can offer you to eat nor any wood for a fire." "Oh! that's all right," replied the dwarf; "I can get the wood and food, too." He ran out into the woods and Boon returned with a huge bundle of faggots, with which he made a roaring blaze. How much pleasanterthe room looked in its crimson glow! "I have a bite to eat, too," chuckled the dwarf, opening a bag which hung tiown near his knee. From it he drew out a small ham, a loaf of bread and a pie. Those he spread on the table, then drew up the cot near the fire and arranged the food on a plate for Ivan. Immediately the sick man began to feel better. The ruddy gleam of the fire warmed his blood and the food gave him strength. Already he seemed a well man. After a breakfast the dwarf took up his tree and just before he set out on his trip he placed in Ivan's hand a yardstick of black wood, curiously carved. "Take that old sack in the corner," he explained to Ivan. "Measure it by this stick and it will turn out any goods you wish by the yard Just as long as you use the stick. But always hold It in your right hand If you take itby the left, misfortune will come." Then the little man disappeared In the forest. i
Ivan built a big fire and, taking up the old sack, began to measure it, wishing It to be black velvet enough to make, his brother's coat Out from beneath the stick there commenced to roll , yard after yard of the softest tilken velvet. When he had enough to make a coat Ivan paused. "I will wish now for some cloth of gold embroidered with jewels that I can sell." he said aloud. He did not know that outside of the window his wicked brother was watching him and gasping in astonishment as yard after yard of the cloth of gold piled on the floor. It came fast and faster till the whole room was full of the yellow sheen of gold and jewels. "I will get that magic stick at once, even If I have to kill my brother!" shouted the older brother, and with that he burst open the door and grabbed at the yardstick. But he seized it In his left hand. - No sooner had he
