BOTH CHAINS STILL CLAIM VICTORY; ; railM CLAIMS ZB8 ELECTORAL VOTES; WILCOX ASSERTS HUGHES TO GET 301

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 At an early hour this morning Democratic Chairman McCormlck was claiming at least 268 votes for President Wilson In the electoral college and Republican Chairman Wilcox claimed 301, each was claiming the doubtful states, Kentucky, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and Washington on the face of early returns were leaning toward President Wilson. Maryland seemed almost

certainly democratic Missouri, Indiana, West Virginia, Arizona and Delaware were leaning to Hughes. ' .Chairman McCormick, however, claimed the president could have a majority of two votes In the electoral college without carrying California, Indiana, North and South Dakota, West Virginia or Wisconsin, from which returns were far from complete but showing a republican trend.

The early morning returns came In slowly. Managers of both parties were anxiously watching Ohio and both claimed victory, as the hours dragged on It became more and more evident that it would be a close election and

there appeared possibilities that In some places it might be necessary to resort, to official accounts to determine

the result, . .' ' "
