Has the parcel post system doubled back on itself? According to figures prepared by Superintendent of Mails Wilson at the postoffice, it is the city man, not the farmer, who is getting the advantages of the system. "Farmers do very little mailing," said Mr. Wilson today. "Less than five per cent of the mail collected from farmers last month was parcel post motter. The percentage of deliveries of parcel post to farmers is a little more than that." Deliveries Abnormal. On the other hand, Mr. Wilson said, deliveries to residences in the city are abnormal when compared with expected results from the parcel post system, showing that it is in the city that parcel post is most popular. The co-operative system for selling farm products direct from the farmer to the consumer by parcel post has not wolted out In Wayne county. In fact. Its use is no negligible as to be scarcely noticeable, the figures Bhow. The four rural routes have done a tremendous business, handling 100,917 pieces of mall in 26 working days in October, Mr. Wilson said, averaging more than 1,000 pieces each a day, except Route A, which did slightly less business than the others. Richmond's rural routes maintained the city's reputation for being one of the greatest centers for distribution of periodical publications and newspapers. Figures for Route A. Arthur Meyer, dean of Paris editors, who has remained in Paris all through this war, as he did all through the war of 1870, tells an interesting anecdote about President Poincare. M. Meyer was received at the Elysee Palace early In 1915, and the conversation happened to fall on popularity and its caprices. "Yes, yes, I know," said President Poincare, "Paris shows less warmth as regards my6elf. She sulks about my departure. (The President and the Government left Paris for Bor. deaux on September 3, 1914, when the Germans were close to the capital.) She would have liked us to remain at our pests. The entire Government had decided to remain, and if its departure had been judged necessary it would have liked me to leave it in the middle of the day, in an open carriage."
