WOMEN'S CLUBS ASK FOR STRONG MOVIE PICTURES
Board members of the Federated Women's clubs of Richmond this afternoon commenced a campaign for getting more of a certain class of educational motion pictures to be shown in the theatres here. A meeting was held in the public library this afternoon to discuss the problem. The president, Mrs. E. E. McDivitt, made clear to the board members that the plan in no way -vould establish a censorship. Personally, she said, she has no complaint against motion picture films shown in theatres here. Need Educational Film - "It is simply that we should have more of the educational films shown here on certain days tor children," she said. The board will ask the co-operation of motion picture theatre owners in working; out details for the plan so there will be no confusion in the class of films and the days for exhibiting them. Following a discussion of the Chafin child-delinquency case, members decided to renew their agitation for a police woman here. The police commissioners will be asked again to appoint a,woma:i on the regular police force. Plans are being made for holding a benefit at the Coliseum soon for the club treasury. CITY BABIES M THAN THOSE An examination - of county baby contest scores by Miss Kennedy, county educational nurse, revealed that babies entered In the city contest were more nearly normal than those in the county contest. The winning city baby also scored higher than the winning county baby. More than half of boys and girls were normal height but less than half of the girls were normal weight and only a few of the boys Tiad the right amount of avoirdupois. The overweights in boys received a plurality of percentage. Singularly, not a boy entered was under height but 41 per cent were over. Miss Kennedy prepared the following table from the score cards: Under height girls, 28 per cent; boys, none. Over height girls, .14 per cent; boys, 41 per cent. NEW BOOKS PLACED IN PUBLIC LIBRARY CAMBRIDGE CITY, Nov. 1. A number of new books have recently been placed in the public library, among which are "Europe Since 1815" by Hazen; "History of the People of the United States," "McMasters; "History of Germany," by Henderson; Larned's "History of Ready Reference" and Warner's "Library of Literature." Mr. Thornburg Is owner and manager, of the Monte Vista Transportation company and owns a 4,000 acre banana plantation on the ITlua river. Known As Banana King. He, Is known' in Honduras as the "Banana King," for through his transportation system he controls the supply along the Ulua river which is one of the greatest banana regions in the world. Mr. Thornburg was born In Hagerstown and educated in Wayne county schools. He married Miss Minnie Barton, a Richmond girl, twenty-five years ago. He was at one time a teacher In the Richmond Business college and in Dalton township schools, Nos. 1 and 4. Only a few years ago he abandoned the commercial teaching field to take up fruit raising. . He attained almost Instantaneous success in his new project and is now one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Honduras. FEW PERSONS CALL TO SETTLE TAXES Tax collections at the county treasurer's office are falling below expectations. Yesterday, $12,949.34 was collected The last day for paying taxes is next Monday and an unprecedented rush is expected between now and that time. The county treasurer's office was kept open last night but only about twelve people called to make payments. The office will be open again Thursday night and Monday night. BEGIN EXCAVATION FOR $60,000 CHAPEL OXFORD, O., Nov. 1. The work of excavating for the new $60,000 Kumler Memorial chapel, Western College for Women, began today. The building is being erected by Mrs. John B. Wight, Montclare, N. J., and Mrs. Ella McKelvey, Pittsburgh, Pa., in memory of their father, Rev. J. P. E.-Kumler, for years president of the Western Board of Trustees. CALL TEACHERS SESSION OXFORD, O., Nov. 1. County School Superintendent Schwarz has called a meeting of the teachers of Oxford, Hanover, Milford and Reily townships, to be held here Friday. PEANUT COMPANY BUYS OLD PLANT
For the purpose of manufacturing salted peanuts and candy, a new 'In-, corporation, .the Perfection Peanut company, has been organized at Cambridge City with $10,000 capital. Incorporation papers were filed at the county recorder's office today. The directors are: D. W. Hernley, New Castle, M. E. Shreeve, Indianapolis, Ellis Filby, Cambridge City, H. B. Beck, New Castle, and H. C. Filby, Cambridge City. The new corporation will purchase the present business of Ellis D. Filby in Cambridge City for $5,200 which will be paid for with one-hundred and four of the two hundred shares which will be issued by the incorporation. L B. DAVIS ELECTED HAGERSTOWN, Ind.f Nov. 1. L. B. Davis was elected councilman at a called meeting for that purpose Friday night. Mr. Davis is the successor of Wm. J. Little, who resigned a short time ago. The Ford was driven by Curt Wickett The Paige had previously been damaged in an accident on the Liberty pike, just outside the city limits and was being towed into a garage. The Ford, had brought gasoline to the car which was towing the Paige and the Ford had just gotten under headway when Sauers, driving south on Fifth street with dimmed lights and his view of the road partly obscured by Chrisman, who was on the hood, turned sharply to avoid striking the crippled Paige and its towing car, and in doing so, hit the Wickett car a glancing blow, tearing off the right rear wheel and breaking the axle. , Hurled to Street. Mrs. Wickett, sitting at the side of her husband, was hurled to the street, alighting on her head. The impact Bent the wrecked Ford into the crippled Paige and there was a resounding crash. Thurston was thrown from his seat in the Paige but was not injured. The collision tore off the left front wheel of the Paige and wrecked a fender. The Davis car, driven by Sauers, as a result of his impact with the Ford had the left front wheel, steering gear and a lamp demolished and the front axle and frame bent and twisted. ... Chrisman. when the Davis and Ford came together, bad his left leg caught between the two cars. It was a half hour before an ambulance arrived to remove him to the hospital. Chrisman climbed on the hood of the Davis at Fifth and Main streets. The damage done to the three cars will amount to
