The Palladium's Straw Vote
One of the most elaborate and painstaking
"straw votes" of Wayne county is being taken
by the Palladium. Every effort is put forth to
see that an honest and unbiased expression of the political sentiment of the community is reflected
in the vote. In order to safeguard the vote as
much as possible, loose ballots are not scattered
promiscuously. This will prevent dishonest persons from voting ten to fifteen ballots for their favorite candidates. So far the reception that has been accorded the persons who are taking the "straw vote" has Been exceedingly courteous, creating the belief that the whole community is interested in seeing that a true ballot is taken and is keenly follow
ing the results. In former years, the vote was usually polled
in Richmond only, leaving out the country dis
tricts and the small cities and towns. This year,
the "straw vote" is being taken all over . the
county, so that a general forecast of the coun tys vote will be published.
The German American Press Ever since the war broke out we have read with interest many German newspapers printed in the cities that have large Teutonic populations. One thing has impressed us Very favorablv. namelv. that none of the editors expresses
himself as hostile to the American government
and to American institutions. Even in the neat of the Lusitania controversy, we noted that all the
editors believed - in the doctrine of "America
first." That the sympathies of these journalists
should be with the Central Powers is natural
That almost all of them "kept their head" and did not preach disloyalty to the Union in their
editorials is remarkable, considering the ques
tions at issue. Many of them do not agree with
President Wilson's foreign policy, but all of them aeree in the principle that as American citizens
they owe their first and only allegiance to the United States. We believe this also holds true of
all the German Americans.
Fire Drill in Schools We beard a pupil of one of the, parochial schools of the city tell the other day of a rigorous fire drill at the institution. It is gratifying to note that the parochial schools are not amiss in adopting safety principles and in believing that "forewarned is forearmed." Some of us believe that the parochial schools of the city are inimical to the welfare of the child and are conducted in opposition to the public school system. Quite the opposite holds true. The most cordial relations exist in Richmond between the heads of the parochial and public schools and pupils from the parochial schools find no embarrassments when they enter the advanced grades of the public .schools. Not only do the educational heads but the teachers also welcome the boys and girls from the parochial schools and make them feel at home at once. Parochial schools are conducted because some churches believe their youth should receive religious instruction along with their secular training. That is the principle on which every parochial school is conducted. There is nothing inimical to American principles and American thought in this belief. Both the parochial and public school educators deserve to be commended for the co-operation they show in Richmond.
Bravery in Action
A correspondent with the French troops writes that few of the Americans with the
French Foreign Legion are left in that heroic
group of men. Most of the men who enlisted when the war broke out have been killed in action. . The Legion has seen action on all parts
of the front and usually has been in the thick of
the fight.
Americans, of course, will feel proud to know
that representatives of this nation were in the front ranks and did not falter when they were ordered to sure death. One wonders, however, whether these men did not lay down their lives for nothing, for they have no issue at stake in the present war. If European countries want to commit wholesale murder, their own people are
the ones, who ought pay the sacrifice.
Charles M. Schwab
In the American magazine of this month is an
article which gives an intimate view of the life of Mr. Schwab, one of the big men of the steel in
dustry. Schwab believes the secret of success is found in application and work. The man who is willing to put in a little extra time for his firm is the man who gets the promotions and also the increased pay. Schwab picks his executives from men who have vitality, energy and willingness to work overtime without wondering whether they
will be paid for it. Now and then, some of us
lose faith in the doctrine of ultimate compensation, but Schwab's statement brings us back to
the truth that no good thing a person does remains unrewarded. Schwab himself is a big man because he worked overtime and because his superior officers recognized his amazing love for work.

Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived a very sad life. Of course he was rich and his every day clothes were nicer than most boys have for Sunday, for they were of velvet and trimmed with gold lace. But he was not a bit happy. The trouble was that he had everything he wanted. One day he lay on a bed of moss watching the swans floating about on the silver water. His face was puckered Into a frown as he kicked at the flowers nodding by bis feet Presently down the walk ran Jano, the Court Pool. Now this does not mean that Jano was lacking in wit, but simply that in the days of which I write there was in every king's palace Bomeone who dressed in a clown's garb and spent his time making fun for others. He was supposed to do funny or silly things, but often he had more sense than his masters. As Jano ran down the path, ' the Prince called to him. ; - ; "Come here, Fool," shouted the spoiled Prince, "I am weary of being alone, weary of this fine court and of life's round of pleasure. "I have : a fairy godmother," , continued the Prince, "bnt she takes no notice of me at all, and here I live bored to death." "Perhaps it would be a good idea to set about doing something," suggested the Fool, twirling his cap with its jingling bells. "I would be glad to make the experiment," eaid the Prince, "if I only knew how to go about it Suppose we change places and you try being the Prince a while.." "A fine idea if we could only carry it out," laughed the Fool. "But we do not look a bit alike. I am sure if I had your opportunity there is much work I could do and many I could help." Neither of the boys had noticed that during their conversation a strange white figure was standing near listening. Yet there, half-hidden by a rosebush, was the Prince's fairy godmother. As she stepped out quickly and touched each boy with her wand, and there in the twinkling of an eye they stood completely changed. Down the garden path came running a page out of breath. He caught sight of the Fool, and taking him in his changed condition to be the Prince for be was the exact image now of the Prince the boy rushed, and, bowing low, exclaimed: Hasten to the palace, my Prince, for your royal father Is taken suddenly sick and you must be at his bedside." "And you, Fool," continued the page, turning to the boy who looked like the Fool but was in reality the Prince,

"you run along to the kitchen and have your supper." There was nothing- else to do but
obey the page. So the frightened Fool,
looking like the Prince, ran up Into the King's bedchamber, while the real Prince, looking like the Fool, hastened to the kitchen. "Hurry up and eat your bread and porridge," commanded the cook In a rough voice. "I have been waiting for you an hour," and with that the man gave the Prince a blow on the cheek. In an Instant the angry boy struck back in a towering rage. The cook at this hit him again with a big iron spoon, the other servants gathering around and laughing' at the eight of the Fool making a row and crying with anger. "I will let you rascals know that I am the Prince," he shouted, "and everyone of you shall land in Jail." "A Prince, the Fool our Prince, screamed the scullery maid, shaking with laughter. "A pretty Prince in a clown's motley dress and with the cap and bells." So all around the Prince they danced, laughing at his rage and mimicking his tears of anger. "Now, go rest in the shed," said the
cook when they grew weary of the sport. Up in the royal chamber the poor Fool stood by the bedside of the dying King, white with fear. At last the doctor solemnly said, "The King is dead." Then, turning to the Fool, he bent his knee before him and said, "Long live our King." With a shudder of terror, the Fool tottered to a chair here he was, the Fool to begin life as a King, and the
real King locked in a shed by order
