CABARET TROUPE PERFORMS AT DEMOCRATIC BANQUET
Bernard Korbly, Democratic tate chairman, gave a "dinner party" for the Wayne county Democratic committeemen and other party workers at the Westcott hotel, last night, bringing with him a troupe of cabaret performers to assist in the entertainment of his guests. Those who attended the banquet unanimously agreed today that the event was a complete success good things to eat, satisfactory spellbinding oratory and good singing. Chairman Korbly told bis guests that if they were good boys and worked hard and harmoniously up to November 7 that they need not be surprised if Wayne county was found lined up in the Democratic column after the ballots had been counted. He pointed out that if this victory was achieved the Sixth district would be safely Democratic. Flnly H. Gray la Absent Rep. Finly H. Gray was conspicuous by his absence. Walter S. Chambers of New Castle, district chairman, assisted the state chairman in "doing the honors." Mr. Korbly in an after dinner speech sounded the warning that "the Republicans were going to attempt to steal the election next month, if it was possible for them to do so." He declared that the Republicans absolutely stole the 1908 election with the exception of the governorship. He said that Tom iaisuuu majority mm uuiv was ivu great for the Republicans to attempt to count him out" Attacks Goodrich. Chairman Korbly attacked the can dldacy of James P. Comstock will carry the Sixth district by 2.500 to 3.000 votes." Walter Bossert, district chairman, evoked a storm of applause at the Re publican rally and meeting in Booster Hall last evening when he made the above assertion. Bossert, Clem Carr and Ed Weidner, were the principal speakers. Jack Ross of Andersonville, who was scheduled to speak, was unable to attend the meeting. Despite the disagreeableness of an unheated building and the fact that the meeting had not been thoroughly advertised, an enthusiastic audience of voters applauded the remarks of the different speakers. He also asserted that as a man heavily Interested in public utilities property it would be unfortunate if he was given the opportunity of naming the members of the state public utilities commission. District Chairman Chambers predicted a crushing Republican defeat in the Sixth district next fall. "DEAD MAN LIVES" WORD OF CORONER CALLED TO BOSTON Following a report made to Prosecutor Reller and Richmond police headquarters that Stonewall Jackson, a colored section hand at Boston, Ind., had died of injuries received when Sam Massin, colored, assaulted him with a stove poker, Reller and Coroner Morrow departed for Boston. Arriving at the camp car where Jackson had been living, they found instead of a corpse a man who was taking a very lively interest in the prolongation of his earthly existence despite his Severe head wounds. The attending physician reported that Jackson would recover. Later it was learned that a report had been circulated about Boston at noon yesterday that Jackson was dead and a Boston citizen, after being so informed, telephoned to Reller and to police headquarters, without taking trouble to confirm the report. Sheriff Steen states that Massin arrived in Richmond at noon yesterday aboard a freight train but disappeared immediately after alighting from the train. No further trace of him has been secured. "What is needed is a law making civil service for subordinate civic employes compulsory. I hope to see such a law passed by the legislature when it meets next year. Requires Better Law "I would not attempt to place the employes of the city electric service plant under the present civil service law because it is a poor law and would provide them with practically no protection from political meddli : "When it was first proposed that the city purchase the electric plant of the Light, Heat and Power company many people opposed such a plan solely because they thought it would be unwise to maintain a half million dollar industry which might be demoralized at any time by handing it over as loot for the political supporters of some future mayor. "They were right in demanding a safeguard against politics getting control of the plant by providing a civil service protection for the plant employes which would guarantee their positions so long as they competently performed their duties. As I have stated the present law does not provide proper protection for these civic employes and we need an air-tight civil service law. "Richmond has been fortunate in that its electric plant has never fallen into the hands of politicians, but without civil service protection there is no assurance that some time a mayor will use city plant positions as rewards for services rendered to him by political supporters." identifying mark Whiskey
